Because Dr. Granite is SUCH a chemistry God.

time to extend that into real life with some good ol' cookin.

Flavored Coffee syrups are little more than sugar water.

So let's make a:

Simple Sugar Syrup
  1. Gather your ingredients.
    • Water
    • Sugar
    • flavoring (an extract of your choice, eg. Vanilla Extract)
  2. Gather your cooking implements.
    • 1 Small to medium Saucepan
    • a 1 cup dry measuring cup
    • a 1 tablespoon measuring spoon
    • 1 liquid measuring cup
    • 1 750 ml (25 ounce) glass container
    • 1 funnel suitable for your glass container
    • a cooktop or heating element suitable for your saucepan
  3. Set your saucepan onto your cooktop.
  4. pour in 500 ml (2 cups) of water into your saucepan using the liquid measuring cup.
  5. turn the heat onto high or max to being the water heating.
  6. measure 500 ml (2 cups) of sugar using the dry measuring cup and add to the water.
    • you need 2 cups of sugar total. you can substitute in 1/3 cup of brown sugar for 1/3 cup of white sugar for a creamier taste.
    • this would make it 1 and 2/3 white sugar plus 1/3 cup brown sugar.
  7. allow the water to begin boiling.
  8. once boiling, reduce heat to medium high and allow to simmer.
  9. simmer for 10 to 20 minutes depending on desired thickness.
    • the longer it simmers for the less water remains. thus, the "thicker" the results.
    • do not simmer for too long unless you want to make rock candy.
    • continue with steps 10 and 11 while this simmers.
  10. put the funnel into the opening of the glass container.
  11. add 6 tablespoons (90 ml) of your flavoring to the glass container.
    • this is a preference thing. I prefer stronger flavoring and thus go with 6 tablespoons.
    • 4 tablespoons is also acceptable.
  12. the sugar water should have finished it's simmer and is now ready to pour.
    • Be careful. this is boiling hot water.
  13. Pour the sugar water mixture into the glass container filled with your flavoring.
  14. allow to cool for a few minutes before capping and labeling.
    • the liquid will contract a small amount while cooling. So don't make it airtight right away.
Simple Sugar Syrup thoughts:Turn a 15 dollar bottle into 3 or five dollars depending on your ingredient costs! I got one of these flavored bottles and just never threw the glass away. also, if you don't add any flavoring you can make All these drinks!

Makes approximately 750 ml (25 ounces) depending on the amount of flavoring added and simmer time.
