time to extend that into real life with some good ol' cookin.
Flavored Coffee syrups are little more than sugar water.
So let's make a:
Simple Sugar Syrup
- Gather your ingredients.
- Water
- Sugar
- flavoring (an extract of your choice, eg. Vanilla Extract)
- Gather your cooking implements.
- 1 Small to medium Saucepan
- a 1 cup dry measuring cup
- a 1 tablespoon measuring spoon
- 1 liquid measuring cup
- 1 750 ml (25 ounce) glass container
- 1 funnel suitable for your glass container
- a cooktop or heating element suitable for your saucepan
- Set your saucepan onto your cooktop.
- pour in 500 ml (2 cups) of water into your saucepan using the liquid measuring cup.
- turn the heat onto high or max to being the water heating.
- measure 500 ml (2 cups) of sugar using the dry measuring cup and add to the water.
- you need 2 cups of sugar total. you can substitute in 1/3 cup of brown sugar for 1/3 cup of white sugar for a creamier taste.
- this would make it 1 and 2/3 white sugar plus 1/3 cup brown sugar.
- allow the water to begin boiling.
- once boiling, reduce heat to medium high and allow to simmer.
- simmer for 10 to 20 minutes depending on desired thickness.
- the longer it simmers for the less water remains. thus, the "thicker" the results.
- do not simmer for too long unless you want to make rock candy.
- continue with steps 10 and 11 while this simmers.
- put the funnel into the opening of the glass container.
- add 6 tablespoons (90 ml) of your flavoring to the glass container.
- this is a preference thing. I prefer stronger flavoring and thus go with 6 tablespoons.
- 4 tablespoons is also acceptable.
- the sugar water should have finished it's simmer and is now ready to pour.
- Be careful. this is boiling hot water.
- Pour the sugar water mixture into the glass container filled with your flavoring.
- allow to cool for a few minutes before capping and labeling.
- the liquid will contract a small amount while cooling. So don't make it airtight right away.
Makes approximately 750 ml (25 ounces) depending on the amount of flavoring added and simmer time.
