I think having the hardcore mechanics in Fallout New Vegas was an awesome idea.

i dunno, it didn't get really REALLy hardcore till you added difficulty mods and food mods and shit so you had to eat more and let the stimpacks build up in your bloodstream and crap, by default no matter what you do you have enough caps to make a giant tower and swim through them like scrooge mcduck.
