Me Against the World
There are times when I find myself drifting away.
Wondering what is out there and what is in store for me today.
Every time I look around I see happiness from afar.
I think to myself why can't I be that star.
I think daily of what my life would be with happiness and coincide to you and me.
Now that I know its Me Against the World
Daily I think the life decisions I've made
I think of how blind can I be if this would ever be
Working and going to school is what I do
Now I'm starting to understand that nobody will never make with me without do.
To understand me and get to know and recognize a good woman that I am
I shall say it's Me Against the World.
Now that my parents are gone and it's me and my brothers.
I have a reason to be the way I am.
The kind person I used to be, the sweet generosity is what I used to give, now that's all gone thanks to somebody at hand.
But god made a way for me to understand the concepts of life.
One day someone will be there, the one that I need but until then it's just me against the world.

What is life? Just a collection of neural impulses and chemical pathways, getting dragged through the universe by the chains of time and biology.

Re: Me Against the World
1. It's all in your head
One day humanity will discover that becoming synthetic feels exactly the same as being organic, and will cheat the universe by becoming truly immortal. In 10,000 years, will anything that any of you see today still exist? Will any echo of events happening to you today still mean anything even 100 years from now? What's the purpose of caring about money or what other people think of you? Your life is much too brief. This is an event-driven universe. Time MUST move forward, things have to happen at any given instance. Therefore the only thing worth existing for is personal experience, which is subjective, because you are the one controlling the experience.
2. This too will end

Re: Me Against the World
In my personal opinion, what matters in life is how you spend your time in it and if you are satisfied with what you've done during the time you were given to live. I do agree that immortality is on the horizon but the human nature will still be a problem and inner conflict between race members of humanity will still be there, waiting to take lives. While Immortality would be long, those that would be lucky enough not to be killed and survive for very long amounts of time will eventually experience one of the theoretical universe end situations, the most accepted one being the big crunch theory. I'm afraid that it'll all come to an end eventually so we might as well enjoy it while we can.

Re: Me Against the World
It's easy to say, when you're so down,
that everything's pointless;
your eyes burn, your ears howl,
your limbs are disjointed.
Barren fields, the barren earth, never more will it flower.
Rub your face and your hands in the dirt:
now is the hour!
So stand straight, looking over your shoulder;
walk on, though you fear to arrive;
don't wait till you know that it's over,
be strong - it's your place to survive.
While the holocaust rages around you,
be the eye of the storm;
though the extent of disaster astounds you,
forearmed is forewarned.
You may have passed time in happier ways,
but there are other mountains to climb:
you've never lived as you're living today -
now is the time!
Stand straight, though your back breaks from trying,
walk on - even now you must strive.
Don't wait - while you're waiting, you're dying;
be strong, it's your place to survive.
The universe is doubtless
unfolding just exactly as it should
and these dreams of remorse or foreboding
just won't do you any good.
The joy, the passion, possessions you own,
the bitterness and the pain,
that everything's pointless;
your eyes burn, your ears howl,
your limbs are disjointed.
Barren fields, the barren earth, never more will it flower.

Re: Me Against the World
I've seen a lot of sights and traveled many miles
Shook a thousand hands and seen my share of smiles
I've caused some great concern and told one too many lies
And now I see the world through these sad, old, jaded eyes
So what if I threw a party and all my friends were there?
Acquaintances, relatives, the girls who never cared
You'll have a host of rowdy hooligans in a big line out the door
Side by side with sister barbara, chief wells and bobby orr
I'd invite the flannigans
Replace the window you smashed out
I'd apologize to sluggo for pissing on his couch
I'll see mrs. mcauliffe and so many others soon
Then I'll say I'm sorry for what I did sleepwalking in her room
So what if I threw a party and invited Mayor Menino?
He'd tell you to get a permit
Well this time tom I don't think so
It's a neighborhood reunion
But now we'd get along
Van Morrison would be there and he'd sang me one last song
With a backup band of bass players to keep us up all night
Three handsome four string troubadours and Newton's old Fat Mike
I'll be in the can having a smoke with Garv and Johnny Fitz
But there's a backup in the bathroom 'cause the badger's got the shits
You may bury me with an enemy in mount calvary
You can stack me on a pyre and soak me down with whiskey
Roast me to a blackened crisp and throw me in a pile
I could really give a shit - I'm going out in style
You can take my urn to fenway spread my ashes all about
Or you can bring me down to wolly beach and dump the sucker out
Burn me to a rotten crisp and toast me for a while
I could really give a shit - I'm going out in style
Make me up dress me up, feed me a big old shot
Of embalming fluid highballs so i don't start to rot
Now take me to Mcgreevy's, i wanna buy one final round
What cheap prick would peel an orange in his pocket
Then hurry up and suck 'em down
If there's a god the girls you loved will all come walking through the door
Maybe they'll feel bad for me and this stiff will finally score
You've got the bed already
And nerve and courage too
Cause I've been slugging from a stash of desi queally's 1980s bathtub brew
You may bury me with an enemy in mount calvary
You can stack me on a pyre and soak me down with whiskey
Roast me to a blackened crisp and throw me in a pile

Come on, motherfuckers, come on
Come on, motherfuckers, come on
Come on, motherfuckers, come on
Come on, motherfuckers, come on
Come on, motherfuckers, come on
Come on, motherfuckers, come on
Come on, motherfuckers, come on
Let's go deep into the phrase, feel the sun rays
Off the forehead, everything is real
Biggie put me on this joint, so I'mma be the big wheel
Watch it spin, hey dad, placed your bet on seven
Peace to 106, 108, 110 and 111th
Hey Biggie, I understand you're from Brooklyn
With .22s in your shoes, yo, keep this joint cooking
Well, why not blow up the spot with Sadat?
Release the brainstorm to make your motherfucking brain warm
A strange form, something kind of lyrical
Biggie the bastard, Sadat's kind of spiritual
Well, in God we trust, guns I bust
Got that disgusting, sewer-style dumping
And, uh, do you know where you're going to?
Do you like the things that I bring?
Make an MC wanna sing for a living
Take the beatdown we fucking giving
C'mon, motherfucker!
What? Niggas want drama, putting work on my block
When I told y'all last week that shit was too hot
Selling deuces and treys cuts my dimes
Somebody don't get paid, somebody's block get sprayed
Reaction is delayed as ya run down the block
Caught one in your chest, your breath come in spurts
Hey yo, Biggie, tell these niggas I'mma hit 'em where it hurts
The Big City, it don't spare no bodies
Call me papi chulo, to all the Spanish mamis
I'm about ten blunts down, drank three or four stouts
Seen five fat asses, passed this bitch with glasses
Hey, your money, that's your stock, yo bitch, pass the Glock
I'mma tell them, "It can happen, don't play me with that rap shit"
Life is real, so Biggie take the steel
I got seven Mac-11's, about eight .38's
Nine 9's, ten Mac-10's the shits never end
You can't touch my riches
Even if you had MC Hammer and them 357 bitches
Biggie Smalls, the millionaire, the mansion, the yacht
The two weed spots, the two hot Glocks
Huh, that's how I got the weed spot
I shot dread in the head, took the bread and the lamb spread
Lil' Gotti got the shotty to your body
So don't resist or you might miss Christmas
I tote guns, I make number runs
I give MCs the runs dripping
When I throw my clip in the AK, I slay from far away
Everybody hit the D-E-C-K
My slow flows remarkable, peace to Matteo
Now we smoke weed like Tony Montana sniff the yayo
That's crazy blunts, mad L's
My voice excels from the avenue to jail cells
Oh my God I'm dropping shit like a pigeon
I hope you're listening, smacking babies at they christening
So you better grab your pistol
Cause if you sit still, I'm gonna make your fucking shit spill
And I'm talking 'bout buckets, why did I have to do it?
Sadat said fuck it, you got a gun, nigga bust it
Cause I got mo' shots to pop ya
Big Poppa, breaking you off something proper
Signing off is the hardcore rap singer
AKA crack slinger, bring it any time nigga
Come on, motherfuckers, come on

Re: Me Against the World
Everything ends, but there's no need to be afraid of it. Embrace it. Everything will end, even time itself. True immortality can only be gained by outliving the entropic heat death of the universe, which is kind of like characters in a film trying to outlive the shutting off of the movie. Even you, you reading this right now, that spark of consciousness inside a rigid tube of meat, will end. It's weird to think about, right? Everyone naturally thinks they're immortal already, so they can go about their lives and not be paralyzed with indecision. But everything is, in reality, temporary. That's one of the pluses of our event-driven, single-camera universe. The bad stuff ends at some point, too.Zygman wrote:In my personal opinion, what matters in life is how you spend your time in it and if you are satisfied with what you've done during the time you were given to live. Re: Me Against the World
The ancient Cathars had the right idea. They were the only religion to get it close.
They thought of themselves as Christian in the sense that they specifically followed the original teachings of Christ. To the Cathars there was no Hell - they thought that was our universe, that they were already there, and that death simply meant your spirit would come back in someone or something else, until you were a good enough person to be let in (hence their own name for themselves, the Good People). The Cathars had some very simple and easy to understand ideas of what constituted a universal type of "goodness", and two tiers of worship: the average layperson merely tried to follow these ideas, while the second tier, the priests and priestesses - the Cathars did not believe in gender - the Perfecti, actually followed them to the letter. No eating meat. Vow of poverty. No children. No marriage. These things are for creating new life, why would you want to bring more life into this mediocre universe?
The Cathars were a very logical people and if you understand life in that way then a lot of things fall into place. Energy and matter are not destroyed, only changed, no matter the source. They found great value in entertainment, because it was literally, to them, like escaping Hell, and likely started the whole concept of the traveling bard or minstrel in medieval Europe. Mankind's search (and nearly there today finally!) for the ultimate escape, Virtual Reality, would have been to them like discovering an open doorway to Heaven.
And why won't it be? Experience is subjective. If your senses tell you you are a God, then who's to say you aren't one? It's those very senses that form your universe anyway. If all your senses tell you that you live in heaven, then you're in heaven.
So rather then negativity for being in this hilariously broken and shitty universe, the only logical choice is positivity. Nothing of what you do means anything, humans - and even sentience - are not special in the universe at all. The Cathars had it right - the only real option is to just be a good person. A lot of us make our own Hells unnecessarily.
The next time you're upset with something, stop a second. Ask yourself:
a) Why do I care about this if it doesn't ultimately matter?
b) How can I instead be positive about this?
Positivity is the first step to freeing yourself from those chains of time and biology. That's all. Just be a good person, for no reason other than itself, and everything else will follow.

Re: Me Against the World
Your heart is more than a machine.
Pumping blood through your body, doing things you've never seen.
Their words come like arrows when they fly.
With mechanical precision they can cut you up inside.
You're more than bolts.
Like the city's more than steel and stone.
Soon your heart is going to overflow.
They push you back down you get up again.
Circuits freeze and androids never dream.
You're more than a machine.
Touchscreens.
Fingertips and pretty lights.
We go through the scanner sideways.
See you on the other side.
Your flesh.
All your skin and all your bones.
Carry all our generations.
With the future still unknown.
But you're more than bolts.
Like the city's more than steel and stone.
Soon your heart is gonna overflow.
They push you back down you get up again.
Circuits freeze and androids never dream.

Re: Me Against the World
Lemmings
I stood alone upon the highest cliff-top,
looked down, around, and all that I could see
were those that I would dearly love to share with
crashing on quite blindly to the sea...
I tried to ask what game this was,
but knew I would not play it:
the voice, as one, as no-one, came to me...
"We have looked upon the heroes
and they are found wanting;
we have looked hard across the land,
but we can see no dawn;
we have now dared to sear the sky,
but we are still bleeding;
we are drawing near to the cliffs,
now we can hear the call.
The clouds are piled in mountain-shapes,
there is no escape except to go forward.
Don't ask us for an answer now,
it's far too late to bow to that convention.
What course is there left but to die?
We have looked upon the High Kings,
found them less than mortals:
their names are dust before the just
march of our young, new law.
Minds stumbling strong, we hurtle on
into the dark portal;
No-one can halt our final vault
into the unknown maw.
And as the Elders beat their brows
they know that it's really far
too late now to stop us.
For if the sky is seeded death
what is the point in catching breath? - Expel it.
What cause is there left but to die
in searching of something we're not quite sure of?
What cause is there left but to die?
... I really don't know why ...
I know our ends may be soon
but why do you make them sooner?
Time may finally prove
only the living move her and
no life lies in the quicksand.
Yes, I know it's
Out of control, out of control:
Greasy machinery slides on the rails,
Young minds and bodies on steel spokes impaled...
Cogs tearing bones, cogs tearing bones;
Iron-throated monsters are forcing the screams,
Mind and machinery box-press the dreams...
... but there still is time ...
Cowards are they who run today,
the fight is beginning...
no war with knives, fight with our lives,
lemmings can teach nothing;
death offers no hope, we must grope
for the unknown answer:
unite our blood, abate the flood,
avert the disaster...
There's other ways than screaming in the mob:
that makes us merely cogs of hatred.
Look to the why and where we are,
look to yourselves and the stars and in the end
What choice is there left but to live
in the hope of saving
our children's children's little ones?
What choice is there left but to live?
to save the little ones?
What choice is there left but to try?

Re: Me Against the World
I like to get into discussions about natural biology, in particular its detriment on the human experience.
My favorite analogy, and I think the most apt, is that of the prison system. Our universe is a prison. A pretty big one, sure, though we're an extremely brief and small part of it. Prisoners here lose all memory of what they actually did to deserve it. Maybe it's not even a punishment, but a reward for good behavior on a previous sentence - it doesn't just work upwards for the human species. The Cathars treated animals with the same respect as a human, because to them, a spirit was a spirit, regardless of if it was currently serving in a human, or an animal. As a species, human beings are extremely bad in general at a lot of things, but one huge advantage is the sense of empathy. The more empathic a human being is, the more positive a person they tend to be.
Humans, like all animals, are subject to the whims of the jail's warden, biology. Biology is every natural creature's enemy. It forces them to compete by very specific rules for domination over each other. Animals do it from the pack to the global level, while humans, as expected, do it sometimes more subtly. Greed. War. The urge to hoard rather than balance is a biological instinct to ensure survival. And it works! It tends to work great among the species that employ it, such as ants that gather excess food for lean times. Biology forces us to do this because our event-driven universe demands progress or stagnation. Kill or be killed. Survival of the fittest.
But humans are starting to know the secret ways around the prison, learning the schedules of the guards and how best to bribe them to look the other way. As a social builder species it's natural to want to know how to build things -or how things are built- and collaborate on doing so. Science are like cheat codes to the universe's rules and laws, rules that are generally hidden most of the time, but with the human's incredibly sophisticated ability to pattern-match it's possible to find out what they are. The ultimate competition is not with each other, or with other creatures, the enemy is the universe itself, and worrying or caring about any other issue is pointless. One day even death will be cheated. One day mankind will discover there are way better universes to live in, and that's why they haven't found ultra-intelligent life yet. All intelligent species probably reach that point at some time in their development, and either leave.. or make their own, better universe, and live in that.
So when it's "me against the world", it's really not. It's you against the universe. All those people in that world you mentioned? They're just not advanced enough to see past their biology. It's not their fault. Humans are a young species and are still mostly animal. Be a good person to help change that, even just in a small way. When people ask me how I can be so calm all the time, I tell them when times get rough, I repeat two things.
Mind over matter. Brains over biology. Ideas over instincts.
Everything is temporary. Even time. Even space. Even this.
