Kenshi is a squad based RPG, set in a sandbox where you, as a player character are not given bonuses over AI (besides not being brain dead, of course.) Here's a paragraph from the steam page,
"A free-roaming squad based RPG focusing on open-ended sandbox gameplay features rather than a linear story. Be a trader, a thief, a rebel, a warlord, an adventurer, a farmer, a slave, or just food for the cannibals. Research new equipment and craft new gear. Purchase and upgrade your own buildings to use as safe fortified havens when things go bad, or use them to start up a business. Aid or oppose the various factions in the world while striving for the strength and wealth necessary to simply survive in the harsh desert. Train your men up from puny victims to master warriors. Carry your wounded squad mates to safety and get them all home alive."

There are many things to do in the game, ranging from having a casual conversation in the middle of a heated fist fight,
Performing mid air gymnastics,
Being sexist as you fist fight women,
And merging into a human abomination,
The game is very open ended, and allows for a lot of freedom. There's several playable races, and a multitude of weapons. It is a hard game to start out with, but to go into it a rogue-like mind set has to be taken. Losing fights is beneficial. You will get your ass whooped several, several, several times. Kenshi is all about slowly getting stronger, richer, or whatever you choose. Trading is equally viable, and you're able to hire bodyguards who will protect you on your route, instead of having to fight yourself. Another key component of the game is being able to setup outposts, towns which you run. You're able to grow multitude of crops for either food, or crafting.
