Alpha Squad:preperation

Kent left the bridge after picking his squad,looking down the dimly lit hallway before slowly walking down, contemplating why the rebels took some random backwater mining colony when there was much bigger colonies not far from here. Stopping outside the medbay, he looked into the reception of medbay, before carrying on to the canteen

SSGT Kent could hear the moans of his squad as he approached the canteen. He walked through the door and cleared his throat. His squad stopped, each of them trying to muster a salute, 2 weeks in hypersleep can do that to a man. Kent put the men at ease, then began to brief them on the mission

alright squad, we’re heading down to a Mining planet. They’re rebelling, as far as command knows about this thing. The CO wants you all in the hanger in 2 hours, is that understood?
The squad tried to muster a “yes sir”, most of them giving up after saying yes. One of them stood out however, PFC Steven, a battle-tested marine who’d served with Kent before.
yes sir
he said, in a grizzled voice.Kent sighed, slowly bringing his flask from his helmet and taking a gulp, before wiping his mouth and strapping it back onto his helmet.
at least one of you is awake Kent said
the rest of the squad grunted, too tired to make a witty comeback.Kent slowly walked out of the canteen, before being stopped by one of his squaddies.
SIR! Kent jumped a little, surprised that one of his other squaddies was awake enough to be able shout that loud. It was CPL Kirchner, one of the squad ENGs, another marine Kent was familiar with.He sighed, slightly irritated.He responded, after staring at the marine, slightly puzzled.
Need something? he said, staring at the marine, trying to figure out what he wanted by looking at facial expressions.
well uh...I was kinda wondering….any idea what planet we’re deploying to?
some mining colony in the outer rim, i’ll  brief the squad when we’re all in the dropship
right sir….


As Kent walked through briefing, he was puzzled, half the squad he saw in the canteen weren’t even picked, who exactly messed with the squad settings? Why would they do that? Kent had many questions, and he expected the CO to have the answers.

He went down the ladder, once on the 2nd deck he saw the CO, overseeing the preparations of the drop ship, ordering different crews around trying to get in done in record time.
trying to beat the marlow’s setup time CO? Kent said, with a smirk on his face. Kent was first stationed aboard the USS Marlow, the ship with the fastest setup time in the entire USCMC.
ugh, I’d only beat that time if these jackasses could work 10 times as fast
The CO turned around, looking at all the crew staring at the CO and SSGT, with faces of disgust
DID I SAY YOU COULD STOP GREASE MONKIES? GET BACK TO WORK
The crew gave a sigh, before getting on with the preparations.
look CO, we need to talk
i’m all ears, speak away
well...someone's been messing with the squad settings, half my intended squad is still in cryo
ah...well, i’ll try and hunt them down, don’t worry about it. You can make do with what you have, right?
yeah bu-
then that's the end of it

The 3 hours were nearly up, the entire squad was in the hanger, helping with preparations. Kent was standing in the corner, watching his squad work together to cut down on preparation time.
Kent shouted the squad over, the squad dropped what they were doing and lined up in front of Kent.

Kent slowly took notes in his notebook, writing down every ones name, rank, anything he thought might be useful to the operation.

the squad boarded the dimly lit, cramped dropship, not saying a single word as they took their seats and strapped in. Kent started to brief them once they all sat down and buckled in. He stood up, took a quick gulp of his flask, then started to brief the squad on the situation

alright squad, we’re going down to planet LV-273, a mining colony in the outer rim. Recently, we lost contact with the colony, before receiving a message off the rebels that they took over the colony and that any ship seen within the airspace would be shot out of the sky. Luckily for us, this dropship moves too fast for the sensors to detect. We’ll land in a black zone, an area the sensors can’t detect. Our main objective, is to link up with any members of the USCM squad that was stationed here. Our secondary objective, is to eliminate any and all hostiles on the ground.Any questions?
Svarlson sighed, before starting to speak
just one sir, why in gods name do we have to walk? Surely we could’ve taken the damn APC.
good question lad, the terrain down there has been deemed too dangerous for the APC, therefore we won’t be taking it.
The squad all burst into conversation, before Kent settled them all down
alright lads, we got 30 seconds before we land. I want you to perform a perimeter around the dropship as  soon as we land, IS THAT UNDERSTOOD?
The squad shouted “YES SIR” trying to battle the roar of the engine to be heard, then….they stopped, the engines cut and the ramp opened….the operation has begun

P.S:this is one of the first stories I've written and I feel I could put some more detail into it. I'll be trying to add more detail about buildings, terrain, movement etc in later parts. The colours represent a person in the squad, in later parts i'll be adding a key with each persons colour. I hope you enjoyed this part of many(looking of doing 6-7 parts if I can)

P.S 2: sorry if your character wasn't in, but don't worry, I still have a certain...task i'll be giving to everyone who didn't get in.
