The jungle was eerily quiet, the sounds of the animal life had departed as the evening sun's journey across the sky left a dying red light splayed across the treetops, the rays of light that penetrate the vines and leaves of the thick canopy far above cast dancing shadows over the floor. The silence was broken by the sound of a twig snapping underfoot followed by a hasty and muttered exclamation of annoyance followed by the return to utter silence.
Having chastised his partners mistake, Roscoe crept forward, indicating with his hand for the group to continue forward. In the dying rays of light a group of four humans moved forward, their motions halted and deliberate creating only muffled sounds as they continued through the undergrowth. A clicking noise from above drew his attention and he casts his eyes upwards, a motion far above briefly catches his eye but the poor light prevents him from seeing it, must be a native animal he thinks silently and, catching the groups observation of the canopy above them, gives a brief gesture to get the group moving once again fully aware that in less than an hour the dying rays of light would be entirely gone and their approach would be cloaked by the nights enclosing embrace.
The group had stopped, the full effect of the jungle canopy strangling the moonlight created patches of utter darkness, the heat of the day had passed onto the humid chill of night, nocturnal creatures had been heard awaking but even they seemed to have abandoned the trees for no signs of life remained, another clicking sound broke his thoughts as he scanned the darkness for the creature, the group were more alert in the dark, they were all briefed on the wildlife and predators of the planet but Roscoe couldn't remember any creature profile with that unnerving clicking sound. The unspoken looks were exchanged between the group as they came to huddle around the map that Roscoe produced from his webbing gave him all the confirmation he needed about the nervousness of facing a nocturnal hunter in its own habitat, especially when they didn't know what it was, even more so when they had their own purpose here. The decision was made to continue moving, with only 1.5 kilometres left to the target zone, they agreed to take a lengthier route to the east to get onto the hills overlooking the target. The group set off warily into the darkness, muffled steps marking their progress as they travelled in single file, brief hand signals were the only communication between them, warning of twigs or burrow holes that would betray their location, but even in this dead silence, the air of tension was palpable as if he could cut it with his survival knife. It was going to be a long night.
