Ever wonder how the Almayer looked like from the outside?
Some sprites I did using piskel (https://www.piskelapp.com/) in moments of boredom. It took a while to get them done (specially the dissected version), but I feel it would be nice to share them with the community.
Here's the U.S.S. Almayer
So, deciding how the Almayer looks like was kind of difficult due to how the map we play in has only two levels , which would suggest the ship is just a pancake. However, after looking into some images of the Sulaco's interior, I got the idea of adding a big engine west of engineering and the "grip" below it as well, so it ressembles the sully but also has some defining characteristics (after all, the Almayer is an Arikara class and the Sulaco a Conestoga class. I guess this means all Arikara class ships look like this?).
One such particular characteristic would be the cargo hold that gives the ship a more bulky look. The way I see it, the ship is built to carry more personnel for a longer period of time (specially since it patrols a more or less hostile sector of space), so it needs more cargo supplies. To reduce the pancakeyness, I also added the chem tanks (that little space between the cargo hold and the dropship airlocks), which supply the chem dispensers.
But I can't explain how the interior works without showing it, so here it is
As you can see, the crew-acessible portion of the ship, A.K.A the actual map, is more or less a big, flat corridor; though, since I thought the hangar should be twice as big as a normal room, I added a bit of structural support between the first and second floor, with the ladders passing through them.
One thing I found a bit funny was how the OB cannon and the reactor ended out; the reactors and the cannon we use ingame are actually way, way bigger beneath, the ones ingame only being small appendages/interfaces.
There are some other things in the image that we don't see at all ingame: the gravity generator (below the reactor) and the ship's engine. The chem tanks I mentioned earlier are shown with a bit more detail, and the room beneath the hangar are big airlocks through which the dropships pass through before heading to space (the plating they lay on ingame are actually gates to these airlocks.
And here's an image of the Almayer nearing LV-624, viewed from space (I had to put the sun behind it and shadow the ship since the LV deployment occurs at nighttime, so I'm sorry if it's too hard to see the ship itself)
That's all
EDIT: Made the images 2048x1024

I just spent 15 minutes near studying the inner drawings of the Almayer you made. Amazing work, let's call this canon now.
