Partner up with the other survivors if you can find them and they aren't locker hiding.

I had an amazing round as a survivor where we killed two hunters, scared off a spitter and boiler combo, and survived till the end as slaves of a predator because the two other survivors sticked with me the entire round.

Teamwork gets you a lot of places, especially when you know all the gun and metal spawns and rush them early before xenos get T2's. Do not be afraid of runners if you got the security shotgun, buck loaded, and have two partners with the revolvers in security. Unless they are really bald, you will be able to kill most young runners without dying. The problems happen when you are dealing with Hunters, Spitters, and later on T3's if you survive that long and xenos really like hunting you.

Teamwork above all else will save you, if you know the map well enough it also helps to know where to run if your deep in the ditch. Fuel tanks are a pretty good deterrent against lone hunters and runners, though they'll not buy you too much time.
You'll likely find that if you can meet up with two other survivors and arm yourselves that you become far more dangerous a target to the early xenos and they'll either leave you alone or take some big early losses for minor gain.
