I don't feel comfortable at all using my real name on the internet. I always try to keep the minimum of information to prevent people from looking me up.
For char names though, I usually think of a name whose meaning gets close to my character's personality.

Using your real life name is not recommended if you want to avoid playing a Mary-Sue or Marty-Stu.
But I like to use the jedi names derived from my family and towns names (using an online name generator), jedi-like names can fit in most universes.

I use my real name, not very creative and didn't like any the random name gave me.
Ed 'Wafflecone' Martin bites the Mature Hunter (251)!
I play as Ed 'Waffles' Martin or his sister, Amaryllis 'Pancakes' Martin.

Re: Who uses their real name?
I use my real first name, not last. Funnily enough, it was the first randomly generated name I got for playing SS13.
"Memories can be vile. Repulsive little brutes, like children I suppose. But can we live without them? Memories are what our reason is based upon. If we can't face them, we deny reason itself! Although, why not? We aren't contractually tied down to rationality. There is no sanity clause. So when you find yourself locked down in an unpleasant train of thought, heading for the places in your past where the screaming is unbearable, remember: There's always madness. You can just step outside and close the door, and all those dreadful things that happened, you can lock them away. Madness... is an emergency exit."
