Don't call me Balto, i'm your Commander.
Hi, this is a little post i wanted to make because there's something that really REALLY bothers me in this game.
First, i didn't thought i needed to remind you, but here's the thing, in this game, YOU ARE A SOLDIER. Yes, you have been in the boot camp and you're now in aboard the USS ALMAYER (notice how it's not the shulaco). Think of it like the titanic. Yes, there is a captain, yes there is a second at charge and yes it's going to sink no matter what you do and there are the crew and the civilians.
Here's the rundown:
If you see the Commander, he isn't sarge, he isn't sir, and he isn't (INSERT COMMANDER'S NAME), he is Commander, and he should be called Commader. You should salute him when he's in your presence until he tells you "At ease". If you are in charge of pepole AKA the SLs and the XO, you should say "All hands, commander on the bridge" and urge them to show respect to their ranking officer by saluting. You should treat him with the respect that you treat your mother with.
If you see an Executive Officer and there isn't a commander, HE IS THE COMMANDER!
If you're a marine, your SL is the only thing that keeps your gun loaded after you waste your 7 ap mags in baldies and shadows that looked mean. KEEP HIM ALIVE AND TREAT HIM LIKE YOUR BOSS. Want to know why? BECAUSE HE IS YOUR BOSS. Your boss does have a boss, but that doesn't make you any less of a maggot.
If you are an engie or a doctor, the same aplies for whoever is in charge. Remember, civilian personnel are Weyland Yutani employees, and you don't know how to handle a gun. Yes, sure you know how to fire a rifle, you only have to pull the trigger, and you might know how to reload a pistol, but you SHOULDN'T KNOW HOW TO RELOAD A RIFLE OR USE A GRANADE LAUNCHER. Also, in the event that command calls for evac, go and evac. I can't say this enough times, go to evac and get the hell off the ship. You aren't ment to combat, you aren't geared for combat and you will only result on either you getting shot by someone incompetent, or you shooting someone more competent. (see this guide for more info on how to not blow your escape pod here: viewtopic.php?f=94&t=12555)
Last, but not least, if you're an mp... Don't be THAT GUY. You know the one, sits in the brig like "oh, this taser is from Weyland Yutani, my dad knows em" fuck you. I ain't having that shit. Most pepole run, let's be fair here, but those that don't run, you don't tase, batton, flash or otherwhise incapacitate them, they aren't resisting, just cuff them and that's it. As a side note, there's this little mechanic called aiming mode, in case you didn't knew. There's a little icon near your intents (see here for more https://wiki.baystation12.net/Combat). If you tap it, whenever you click on someone, you'll aim at them. They will either stand still or be shot. Use this when arriving at an scene to keep pepole from doing stupid stuff. Keep it on while you cuff them, as it also shoots if they:
-Take an item from their backpack
-Try to attack or dissarm you
-Try to shoot you
-They start writing (watch it when near the CL)
You can also tap on pepole again to shoot regardless of the circumstances and allow them to walk in the case you have to escort them from afar. It takes some time to master, but can bring intense rp situations.
Now that I gave you information that you won't follow because i'm tired of seeing pepole doing crap rp That they will do regardless, I'm out.

Re: Don't call me Balto, i'm your Commander.
Yes, yes. I know of the aiming mode. It works sometimes, but you have to directly click the person, and that sometimes gets tedious. I have used it many times, but sometimes I like being subtle in what I'm doing.
Onto your point of the rifle, I don't understand the mechanics of the rifles either. The SMG is uh.... it's that thing that has what's needed, but you just don't know why they'd include it if you weren't trained to use it.
I call my superiors by their name or surname since that's my way of showing respect. I'm not addressing them by a rank that was given to them for being in an organization where they are very likely to die, I'm addressing them by their identity. I will use their ranks when addressing them here and there but for the most part, I will address people by their names for sanity sake.

Re: Don't call me Balto, i'm your Commander.
I've never been anywhere close to the military IRL but here's some rules I abide by in-game to stay in character.
Everyone is addressed as "[rank] [last name]" first time I talk to them. Then I just call them "[rank]" (normally I'm against txtspk ic but when I and others write "LT" or "CDR" or "SSGT" I mentally read it as the full thing so I just use those abbreviations) or "[last name]". Never first name. Nickname ONLY if it's the same/close below rank and not some Gary Stu shit. If your nickname in any way sounds like it relates to combat or some innate stoic virtue I'm not using it.
Commander is always Commander/CDR [optionally last name] no matter who I am or who they are. If a specialist has to take command and I'm a different squad's specialist you bet I'm calling him Commander.
The best tool to aid in doing this is to take in-game notes. If you're an enlist, type note every time you see someone in your squad with an icon next to them and then type in "[job] - [last name]". Then you're not yelling for your medic, you're yelling for Doc Matthews. You're not asking where the fuck the engineer went off to, you're asking what happened to Engi Jones. Similarly as an officer you'll want to get down the names of your SOs and their squad, even, and the guy to blame in each department. Though your job's easier since you can access a crew manifest.
On the note of Doctors using weapons I just assume they've been given basic firearms training before being allowed to serve on the Almayer. They have SMGs in their armory with spare mags for them so they probably know how to reload those. M4s should be piss easy to reload anyway, the mag pops out on its own so all you have to do is chuck a new one in. The barrier to using these weapons as a doctor can be roleplay, but it's perfectly valid to roleplay as if you've been trained on everything relating to them that the grunts have, the real barrier is that you shouldn't be shooting anything unless everyone in your vicinity has a full green bar.
And the whole "you HAVE to evac if you're anything but a grunt" thing rubs me the wrong way. Lots of people don't want to be forced to ghost and watch all the marines and xenos have fun for the next half an hour especially if the marines are close to turning the tide. Sure, it's roleplay and closure of your character, but again, sometimes you just wanna be part of the fight and shoehorn in an RP reason for that.

I'm not saying you HAVE to evac. I'm just saying that more pepole should evac. It makes the more sense from an rp standpoint, and i see way too many "combat doctors" in the CiC getting killed way too soon.

I get your point and all. It's just with ranks the experience and intelligence levels are all over the place.
It's hard to respect your Sgt when the Pfcs are smarter then they are.
On the other hand, I like to be casual with people I see a lot.

Re: Don't call me Balto, i'm your Commander.
Army here. Couple thaaaangs....
Sir works. I've called 2 Star Generals "Sir" before. Commander on a naval vessel of this size would probably my in the Colonel range of rank.
People should absolutely be saluting more often and at attention, etc, primarily during briefing times.
Sarge works as well, but don't call an enlisted man Sir, they work for a living, Damnit!
When does the "Pomp" end? The moment combat hits. You're not going to be yelling out ranks in combat often due to the likelihood of multiple people with the same rank in a close area. You yell out their name to warn them of important info.

+1 Title is 10/10 would Crunk again, anyhow interested on this specific title. Interested from what the title is said, being said this multiple times whenever I am the Commander. This is quite a well formatted and well said post and do agree. Sometimes its annoying when they outright call me hey yah balto sometimes let it slide depending on the situation but usually quite nice hearing. "Greetings Commander" or "Morning Commander, this operation has gone to shit."

Re: Don't call me Balto, i'm your Commander.
I literally call everyone by their shortest name. Or the easiest to write.
In CM you dont have time to write hard surnames and such. Even when I play aa SO, marines use my nickname... So in the end, nobody cares.

This. It's just outright annoying when Private BaldieMcChromedome is like "yo wazzup ed." It's like, why would you call the commanding officer by their first name on a strictly business mission, like you don't even know the guy. For some people though, it's fine because they do know you on a personal level. Nevertheless, I do agree that it's nice hearing them say 'commander' instead of your name.Shyguychizzy wrote:+1 Title is 10/10 would Crunk again, anyhow interested on this specific title.
Just some funny moments.

I served in the Army and the most glaring error is calling Marines anything other than Marines. That is called ' Asking for a bad time™ '.
Army - Soldier
Navy - Sailor
Marine - Marine/Corpsman
Airforce - Airman

Re: Don't call me Balto, i'm your Commander.
i mean, yeah everything you are saying is true, but you have to look at the silver lining. while talking shit to the CO and challenging his authority may be poor RP and not "how a real marine would act", also consider that it is one of the quickest and easiest ways for marines to bond and joke together. doesnt have to be about the CO, but most of the robust awesome squads i've been in began the round talkin shit about the higher-ups. so it is slightly a necessary evil i think. and i mean if you are going to discuss this for the Commander, what about the Corporate Liaison? at this point it is a treasured traditional meme on this server to treat the CL like utter shit and call him a nerd, when "a real marine" would be resepectful. so where do we draw the line?

I only know spc.jusa297 wrote:If you're a marine, your SL is the only thing that keeps your gun loaded after you waste your 7 ap mags in baldies and shadows that looked mean.
