As someone new to SL role
Your primary concern is leadership and using your binocs and orbital beacon right? Just asking because I am new. I tried it out and I thought I did rather well by telling my squad to be cautious, don't be a hero, build defenses and move slowly. I had all my squad mates helping the engineers and moving other squads wounded... That's all I could do at the time I thought. Is there stuff I am missing?

That's the basics.
Good job.
Experiment if you want, I won't judge.

Re: As someone new to SL role
Remember to listen to command, not just your SO. You'll often get a better understanding of your surroundings if you communicate with the other SLs. You should also try to be as concise as possible when requesting supplies and to remind command of them in a timely manner, requisitions and SOs forget to set them up and launch them.
This is what dreams nightmares are made of.

Remember to tell your squad members to protect your medics.

Re: As someone new to SL role
I was in your squad I believe; you weren't awful by any means but I could tell you were new. I have two points of advice.
1. Communication. You weren't lacking per say in this area but SLs need to be constantly informing their squads with command updates/developments in the current fight over comms. Again I didn't think you were bad at this, you were a little quiet at worst but it's something to always keep in mind.
2. Getting along with your squad. This one isn't so much a requirement as it is a bonus; you should try and get your squad to like you. People like myself make jokes over comms or in the briefing, try and have a bit of a laugh before everyone gets thrown head first into the xenos, but I did notice you seemed very serious. Now I get this might just be how your character is, which is totally gucci, but I would avoid telling me I'm going to die when I crack jokes over comms. Marines that like you are more likely to fight well for you, if they dislike you they will hesitate to carry out your orders or sometimes straight up refuse. Again, just something to keep in mind.
Otherwise you seem to be off to a better start than most SLs, especially seeing as you're here trying to improve which is a rare and welcome sight.

Re: As someone new to SL role
That's the gist of it. You're a command role, not a super soldier. Just focus on leading your squad and you should be alright. One other big thing to focus on besides fire support is your supply chain. Try to anticipate what resources you are using heavily so that way you can send up orders to command without running out first.

One neat thing some of the old Charlie SL's did when I used to SO them was force all their squad to gather round the table and eat together before briefing.

To be SL you need to do two things. Talks and not die. Ideally you should not shoot much if at all.

Re: As someone new to SL role
Form a bond with your squad.
Take advise from your squad, there is no shame in admitting you were or are wrong.
Maintain order but don't do it so much that the squad is like boot camp rp. You want just the right balance when it matters.
Keep the majority of your squad with you. Splitting up with fireteams often results in them never returning to the fold. Instead use fireteam to organise your one big mass of people in to lots of mini cogs in one machine.
Play more like a supporting role, than an assault role. SL is pretty much the same playstyle as a medic 99% of the time.
A lot you'll learn over time man, just hop in and be the best you can be.

Make sure you ask for everyone's names, last name or not. Then take those names down on the Add Notes function, located in the IC tab. You should now be able to scream for your specialized squaddies and PFCs.

Re: As someone new to SL role
I'm learning. I've been implementing all your suggestions and people do respond well when you talk to each of them. However I did get a squad wiped due to a Commanders stupidity IE "Rush the aliens base". That being said orders are orders.

Also, if you're gonna die because your orders are a suicide rush, at least try to die in style.
How you may ask?
Well it's up to you how you die!

Re: As someone new to SL role
Give someone your flamethrower, they are more expendable than you.
Also, someone a while back said that if you want to practice being a command-focused SL, that you should not bring a primary weapon, instead just a pistol. That way you focus on communicating with your squad and command, and not shooting xenos.
Also, have a semi-memorable gimmick. When I am an SL I like to shout cheesy action movie lines over comms, and YEE-HAW whenever we kill an alien. Silly stuff like that can build team spirit (as long as you are not too memey) and make the round more enjoyable.
Oh, and never let an MP take one of your men off the front lines for a stupid reason. The marines like it when you stand up for them.

Re: As someone new to SL role
Basipally you don't want to die and keeping in touch with your squad, command, and POs for close air support are the key things you want to do as an SL, remember to abuse strafing runs from POs as much as you can before you're either A. Pushed into hives and can't use it or B. Stuck defending the FOB and can't get a good mark.
