Phil 'Termite' Smith:
Walks through the halls of a sterile white hospital, fully suited for combat, and gazes through a window into a room. He sees a younger set of his parents cradling a baby in their arms. Oh how he could barely see their faces through the bright lights. He proceeds through a door at the end of a hall, into an even brighter light.
Asphalt.
The screams and yelling of a hundred little kids echos across the school playground. He sees a younger Phil tossing a rubber ball to a girl across the court. Oh how he remembered the day that they met, burned into his mind much like how a sharp pain burned in his chest. A bright light consumes the blacktop.
Low music and the mixed smell of colonge and perfume.
The galleria overlooking the spaceport, prom night. A young couple dancing on the balcony and chatting with friends. Oh how we loved to dance. A night of fun and love.
A roar of thruster and a blast of wind as the starship left the starport gantry.
She left for the frontier a few weeks later. Oh how he missed her.
Boots and shouting. Bootcamp.
Endless drills and evaluations, and too many pushups. Oh how he hated that drill instructor.
Gunfire and screams. Hell.
The creatures had just torn their SL to bloody shreds, the man screaming as his lungs left his chest. Phil looks around and sees the same story being repeated across the battlefield. He looks to his right and sees himself (of course, this was all a few short moments ago). Clad in a gas mask and armor, rifle in hand. Scared out of his mind. The boy begins to reload when one of the creatures throws itself at him.
Oh how short life is.
Phil watches as the xeno quickly kills the person he was a few short moments ago. So that is what it is like to watch ones life flash before your eyes, he thought quietly. Phil walks through a quiet hall, much the one his parents carried him through after his birth, into a cloudscape. Surely the pearly gates aren't too far away. Oh how he hated marching in full gear.
An angelic being appears in front of Phil. A familar voice comes to his eyes and his heart melts.
"Not yet, my love. It is not over. Not by a long shot". A bright, painfully hot light consumes Phil.
"HES BACK", the corpsman yells as he puts away his defib. Phil opens his eyes and looks himself over as he lays on the ground. His wounds have been bandaged, his veins full of liquid medicine. His rifle at his side and the same nightmarish creatures that just killed him a few meters away. Phil gets up and grabs his rifle. A loud chunk as he cycles the weapons bolt and checks his ammo counter. As he strolls back into the fray, a single thought flashes through Phil's mind.
Oh how full of wonder this universe is.
"Huh, would you look at that... We are screwed yet again."

You can give a smartgun to every marine, and they would still find a way to FF with it.
