Background Characters

Being a background character is fun. I am not a particularly interesting person. In fact, my only real fame was being the last marine on the Almayer, and a few minor last stands. Other than that, I am just a guy. An average man who stands in the face of unspeakable horrors with only his armor and rifle at his side. TLDR: we are all Imperial Guardsmen, the redshirts of CM.

I wrote a long, long post about this sort of thing a couple of years ago on another website.

Basically, it's the normal characters that are made interesting by their players who end up truly captivating, even if they're "background characters" to begin with. You can get a lot further with a brown-haired, bog-standard marine named something like Emma Johnson than you can with a pink/purple-haired special snowflake called Neveah 'Reaper' Justice. If you are shit at characterising yourself or otherwise working a personality into your gameplay, it'll show up no matter how much effort you put into character setup.

Then again, a lot of the stuff I wrote the initial rant about doesn't apply here on CM, as people are forced more rigidly into their assigned roles and the roleplay here is round-based rather than persistent.

I'm flattered, but yeah everyone has moments where they are r o b u s t, and moments where they spend the whole round in the engine room (or brig)

What matters is that YOU enjoy yourself, don't worry about what other people think.

This is the best way to phrase it, whoevers playing can decide who’s who, including the main character minus the plot armor

I could go on but they're all people who started off as nameless ghouls to being instantly noticeable.

Everyone but the CO is a background character to Wolfgang. And the CO is the moderately retarded sidekick that needs to be fed skittles and locked in their office to prevent them from doing too much damage.

Jokes aside. The main character in anyone's story is themselves background characters are anyone that is required for that story to continue but you don't interact/see that much. For most marines background characters include the CIC staff, RO/CTs, Medical staff, Pilots and of course the primary antagonist the MPs.

The whole ‘background character main character’ thing is idiotic in my opinion. People are people. You do amazing things and you FF your entire squad. People make mistakes but they also make people’s day. Honestly it doesn’t matter, in the long run.

Of course in a pessimistic view everyone is forgotten eventually. But, the least you could do is have fun and stop giving your character and others labels. How’s about everyone is just a person, not a character?

I always use my real name and personality on my characters. You cannot get anything more real than that!

Man, I’m always a background character. Yea occasionally I get a few cool moments, but Taegan has never been a real highlight to a round! It’s way more fun thinking of yourself as background because then everyone feels important and a part of the team. Plus you get way less salty when you die!

I get my fun on CM from bantering with squad mates, successfully pulling off wacky shit off and killing Xenos. End of game praise, medals and being recognized as an overall badass or hero is just icing on the cake for me. I don't really care all that much about being a "background character" because I personally know I did something to help others out, though if I got zero recognition for stuff I do I'd admittedly be bitter.
