It's Ma'am.

Deal with it unless you want to continue with your theories.

Call everyone ladies and there will never be a problem. If the marine is female you're just being polite. If the marine is male you're insulting them like any good officer would.

I was under the wrong impression, as many around here, that Sir was indeed gender neutral. A quick search shows it's not:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/sir#Noun
https://forum.wordreference.com/threads ... e.2948790/
https://english.stackexchange.com/quest ... e-officers
https://www.reddit.com/r/Military/comme ... icers_sir/
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/0 ... -outdated/

Thus, from a RP point of view it would make perfect sense for the female superior officer to correct the underling.

Well, in the French regular army at least not using the proper noun is a lack of respect and yes, it's ma'am for women. On another hand, it's not even a minor offense, so drop that damn taser already.

Disrespect to a superior is a 5 minute minimum (stacking) charge. Call a female officer 'Sir' three times and you've got 15 minutes minimum 30 mins max.

They all add up over time. Doubly so if you are an ensign or above, because you get conduct unbecoming added. Tack that onto the above example. 3 counts disrespect + conduct unbecoming = 60 min brig time. At which point the CMP can throw you in permanent confinement.

Boom.

Pretty sure the CMP would be having a strong word with the MP who decided to give them max sentencing on all 3 counts. Not to mention the CO thinking his officer staff should all just go cryo themselves outside of an airlock, more so then he does normally each round.

Sir is a gender-neutral term. You address the commission or rank, not the person.

I quoted six sources, which were those I found. Could you quote me one?
I'm sincerely curious, the sources I gathered said it is not the case, and that the mistake's origin is on fantasy works in the media, which do not reflect how the real armed forces work.

It's quite common in science fiction for military female characters to become offended by people calling em "ma'am". I'm too lazy to give you examples but there're out there, those nasty tomgirls. So each time I see a female commander I tend to call her sir at first, just in case she's one of those. They're, sadly, quite rare in-game though.

If you address an officer by their rank as an enlisted, or NCO, you're in for a bad time
It's not inaccurate to refer to an officer by rank. Especially in the presence of multiple officers. Lieutenant Hart and Lieutenant Johnson are having a nice chat over a cup of coffee. You need to speak to them, so you walk over and address them as Sir. Which one are you talking to? No idea.

Hell no, either you use sir/ma'am. Either the rank directly but in no case both. Also if you hesitate, just go by the rank, if you don't know the rank, just go by the sex.
(And that's why during bootcamp you often hear boots saying Sir rather than the rank itself, and cause its a tiny bit more formal. Too.)

It's almost impossible to tell someone's gender from the appearance of their sprite anyways.

Then you go by the rank, it's a tiny bit less formal but it fits aswell.

Honestly i'm adressing with sir sometimes i do use ma'am as well when i'm not lazy but i never met someone to get triggered over that fact though it seems really stupid IMO,i don't yell at someone for calling me sir even though i'm a girl in-game.

I've had people adress Roscoe as ma'am now. Which is odd. I find that slightly insulting as you would in real life. It would be construed as a targeted insult just as disrespect to a superior.

Ma'am for females.
Sir for men.
