Female officers getting pissed off for improperly addressing them?
Whenever I call a female officer in game a 'Sir', they get extremely pissed off and say that it's "Ma'am".
In the military isn't any officer called a 'sir', regardless of gender?
I try to call any female officer I talk to "ma'am" out of respect but really isn't it fine to call them "sir" anyways?

Yes. Their complaints are invalid. You're not addressing them - you're addressing their commission.adrenalinetooth wrote: ↑16 Mar 2018, 15:46In the military isn't any officer called a 'sir', regardless of gender?

Yah gotta RP this shit man, either turn it into a joke or just follow through.
Or you can do what I do and call them by their position or rank.
I call the CO commander or a SO, LT and yada yada yada.

Call them by their rank to avoid this problem!
But saying "Sir" in the military is basically gender neutral.all that being said, call them what they order you to call them less you get BEed.

It's all fun and games until that officer goes on the military police radio net and requests MP to arrest me for showing disrepect towards a superior for not addressing them the way they see fit..Sargeantmuffinman wrote: ↑16 Mar 2018, 15:49Yah gotta RP this shit man, either turn it into a joke or just follow through.

Re: Female officers getting pissed off for improperly addressing them?
The word "sir" in the army is gender neutral, it means respect and shows that you have some regard for the chain of command. It is used to address both male and female officers - if a female officer gets upset over the use of the word "sir" (in a non-malicious way), they're being a snowflake.

Both are acceptable, though saying "ma'am" is generally encouraged. That is unless they hold a special position which requires you to refer to them by title and not rank or commission like "Drill Instructor".

I think it honestly depends on the person, but calling the officer by their rank eliminates the problem entirely.
I know in Canada if you called a female officer a Sir, you'd probably have a nice conversation with someone of rank.

Re: Female officers getting pissed off for improperly addressing them?
i guess it depends on what military environment your comparing it to
on the US army side ive never heard of a female CO being called sir, it's just always ma'am because thats what they are
other countries/branches may do it different, not sure.
the USCM may also do it different, not sure what their regulations are either
its not a huge deal for them to get pissed off about though, and they shouldnt. simply out of respect you should just call them whatever they prefer if they correct you and life'll be easier for everyone.

If you address an officer by their rank as an enlisted, or NCO, you're in for a bad timeUnknownLife wrote: ↑16 Mar 2018, 16:27I think it honestly depends on the person, but calling the officer by their rank eliminates the problem entirely.

It's totally acceptable from an IC point of view. "Ma'am" is the one to go is you want to avoid the problem.
But... that depends on the player, saying "Sir" isn't bad, it's neutral.

As a SO I allow my squad informality, and sometimes sneak a bottle of booze or two their way either by sending it down with a private or having them search the bar.
Other squads? Not so much.

Re: Female officers getting pissed off for improperly addressing them?
In the US Army, I've always heard and called a female officer ma'am in every interaction. I'm not entirely sure how it's like in other nation's militaries. Though I'm assuming in technicality, you could use Sir as a gender neutral term when it comes to rank.
Not that it makes much of a difference here in the long run, being a video game and all.

British army Female officers are called "ma'am" and males "sir".
I go by this in every game, unless the lore specifically states that all officers are called Sir.
Sir to me is a Male identifier, given that it has been used in my Country for centuries to denote Knights and men of rank. Women of similar status are called Dames or Ma'am.

I get offended because Ritona is sometimes "He", I'm alright with the "sir", but it's tidbit better RP.

I go by gender specific terms, personally.

Re: Female officers getting pissed off for improperly addressing them?
Sir is generally the term used if you don't know whether someone is a Sir or a Ma'am. Once you know which they are, you just use that. Easy peasy.
