Honest criticism about your squad leader

Post by Recounted » 18 May 2018, 13:02

Here in this thread we take in the cons of yourself as a squad leader from the fellow marines you boss around like a chest piece. Just say your Ic name and let everyone tell you what you need to improve on.

I'll start

Stop blowing your whistle so much. I don't care who the fuck you are just stop spamming it.

If we're running don't blow it 9 times. I'm okay with a double whistle to say we're leaving, but stop blowing it so many extra times please

I know we're supposed to criticize the person above or whatever but this is sound advice for everyone

I've never played Squad Leader! :D

Anyway, Ray Dubi meets that fine line between over-the-top humor and actual competence. He knows how to give orders and delegate tasks, so I don't have any criticisms.

Dana 'Croc' Swartwout - dawdling, unsympathetic Squad Marine/Specialist
Damon 'Hellboy' Banner - satanic, pyromaniacal Squad Marine/Specialist

Phil Smith here.

I get a bit flustered, especially with trying to get marines to follow my orders perhaps because my name doesn't carry as much power as some of the other SLs.
"Huh, would you look at that... We are screwed yet again."
Plays as Phil "Termite" Smith

You can give a smartgun to every marine, and they would still find a way to FF with it.

After every round or death I try to do some self reflection on what I did wrong or what I could have done to improve but I also need external criticism to get better.

One of the good Sls. Doesn't really have a favorite squad, but he could communicate a bit more and use CAS more. The only criticisms that I could have given.

Here's some for every SL. Use CAS more often. Also I can't remember my round with park as a SL to criticize it, and the rest of the people mentioned I haven't worked under at all.

Honestly, I already know what my personal issue is when I go NCO.

Mainly that I struggle under pressure. When there is a lot going on at once, I start to lose focus and have trouble keeping my men together. I try my best to be a good squad lead, but when the heat is turned up, I tend to get more stressed than I should.

The best example of this is during a round on prison, where during an incredibly heated battle, Delta leader started screaming about doing a coordinated push. However, I was also trying to call in CaS at the same time, the whole time he was just YELLING and YELLING about coordinating an attack while I'm trying to get air support, I couldn't do shit all. I was overwhelmed and bumbled up.

I doubt it would have worked anyways, but the fact that I couldn't go through with their plan due to already having so much to deal with in a short span was difficult enough.
Sometimes, bravery comes from the most unlikely sources.

If you were another SL coordinating that push isn't your job. The delta SL is yelling at CIC because they give orders. Those LTs chilling in a safe area are the ones that deal with that, calling in air support is what your forte should be. So that nervousness you are feeling is from biting off more than you can chew. As a SL I focus on the layout of my men, and the actions they are performing.

So I think the best criticism for you would be to focus on your Lt and your squad, also for the pressure problem youll figure it out, I'm sure it can't be self confidence because you are very capable of playing SL, and focusing your attention should help.

It's much harder to use CAS than you would think though. Between organising your squad, keeping in contact with command, being in a fight with xenos and other duties you can forget that CAS is a thing or you're getting harassed enough to the point where using CAS would be unwise.

There's also the fact that a lot of the time you can't use CAS.

Not a squad lead, but CMP Knight - man was he a bulldog.

Charlie Leader left a motion sensor out for someone else to take. Well, that's unsecure equipment, put him in the brig before briefing. PO got into a fistfight to defend himself? Assault and Conduct Unbecoming of an Officer, brig him! Someone set the timer on that PO for 10 minutes? All MPs to the Brig for stern talking. Someone put up a "Do Not Smoke" Sign in the Brig? Damage to Government Property, take them in. Oh, a researcher isn't in medbay or is smoking? Neglect of duty!

I know I don't use CAS that often and I barely use mortars since it usually takes too long for me.

I feel like "use CAS more" is a valid criticism for every single SL ever. It really is criminally underused.

I'm always happy to see you as charlie SL since you know what you're doing. As a minor criticism, could maybe stand to be a little less angry when things are going poorly. I could see how it might be off-putting to newer people and wouldn't want them to get a bad first impression of charlie!

Fair point.
It's my go-to to be angry marine in combat. I like to think tactical yelling and repetition gets people moving. Sometimes I uh....get too into it ?
On another note, if you've ever seen me MP you might notice I can be equal parts angry and nice. Briggin' a baldie isn't exactly a achievement imo.

As SL, I also tend to know stuff the rest of the squad may not know...like how everyone else is dying/fallingback so I try to spur on my squad and prevent that. I also love OBs and use 'em almost always but find CAS to be unreliable due to POs not going fast enough or not getting a good shot and me feeling like it would be a waste of CAS. I probably should utilize it more.
