So, when a tank has a clear destination the driver of the tank usually knows where and how to get there. In cases such as these the best way to follow the tank is from behind or, less optimally, from the sides.

Alternatively, the squad can take up positions to the sides and even the front of the tank. In doing so the squad becomes much more loose in formation but more able to see contacts in buildings and to the sides for example.

I find that staying at or near the corners at the back of the tank works. The tank pivots around the back so if you stay at its corners it won't roll over you.
