MPs as the Scrum Masters

Post by ThePiachu » 29 May 2018, 14:02

Yesterday I was playing a round as a CMP. It was a round on Prison Station, and I think Marines won that round (it looked like xenos were on the run, but I had to go to sleep before it ended). There was a fair amount of things to fix - someone dropped a live grenade before the briefing, at one point the CIC ran out of power because CE was planetside, another MT lost sight because they were welding without eye protection, and even some baldy Brazilian decided that CM was a game where MPs shoot other MPs.

While I was running around and sending MPs around to make sure those problems were being solved, I realised something - myself and the MPs were essentially working as Scrum Masters - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6v-I9VvTq4 (funny video, worth watching). We were the enablers and the process guardians, making sure everyone does their job and the process isn't disturbed. Low power in medbay? That's a problem we go to engineering to fix. XO wants the CE back from the planet? We send an MP to bring him in. A bald marine doesn't know what to do? We walk him through the process, linking to the quickstart guide in LOOC, and we make sure he gets to the dropship.

We solve the problems (often by reaching the right people and delegating as skills apply), and we make sure the machine is ticking. I think this is an approach to being an MP that doesn't get mentioned too often. Seriously, be this guy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6v-I9VvTq4 .

Smart MPs prevent, cleanup, and resolve. They are the enforcers of order against the neverending tide of chaos that is the Colonial Marines.

MP should be explicitly a Moderator and Mentor position. In the rules and guides, however, it's basically treated as a High RP position where players are allowed to exploit rules to soft grief others and make their own "fun". The game or immersion isn't improved any by MPs running into Prep and arresting SLs for Flamers being left out, for example, it's just server approved griefing.

If the server did more to encourage mentorship of the position, especially as a proving ground for whitelisted roles like Pred and CO, it would make the server a much better place.

I played MP once, but then it reminded me exactly what I do in real life, and I have been traumatized ever since.
You're pretty much the responsible adult on the ship who has to take care of the other adults, and spank them or put them in time out once in awhile.

Oh and because you're so good at that job, you're expected to do other people's jobs as well!

JUST LIKE IRL ughhh..

Without MPs, I reckon at least 30% of missions would devolve into all out carnage on the ship within twenty minutes. The req line alone would be more deadly than all Warriors combined especially, god forbid, someone is new at handing out equipment to squaddies. The shit I've seen go down on that req line will give me flashbacks and is basically a monument to the folly of man. Take away MPs and the req line would become dead man's alley, a no go zone, medals of bravery would be rewarded to those who brave the queue, and artists in future years will paint Guernica-esque murals that will bring tears to the eyes of the most hardy of vets longing for an RDS and two mags of AP ammo.

It would be fun every now and then to have an event focused solely on messing with the meta - "no MP round" would be interesting to witness. So would be "you have all the meta knowledge you as the player have, go nuts"...

I do like the idea of a meta busting "everyone for themselves" round.
