Flechette rounds

The shotgun rounds in the purple box.

What's special about them and where do I get them?

They're admin spawned for now. They're between slugs and buck. They're still being tested.

They're admin spawned for now to be tested, and maybe released+balanced for later.

I got my hands on some of them last night, they seem to be a weaker buckshot with a longer range.

Well. When there's a shotgun shooting razor blades or steel darts, I'm taking anti-FF measures to maximum overdrive..

Which.. Means I am staying away from the guy with the shotgun. Always.

Flechettes IRL: What I call ASHI Shot.
Awesome Sounding, Highly Ineffective. It's the equivalent of shooting someone with a bunch of wooden splinters.

IRL imagine the buckshot shell but instead of 12g miniballs inside, it's tiny needles that are so strong but so tiny that they penetrate armor. They're nasty and painful to anything that moves.
In game they're the mixture of slug and buckshot

I don't particularly like them in their current format.

They have too much spread atm (should have a 3 tile wide cone at Range 6 instead of 5 wide), and their AP should be on par with slugs.

Flechette in real life is uh, not really used. So it was kinda surprising to me that it got added at all. In-game it predictably sucks. Flechette's armor piercing capabilities in the real world are pretty lackluster. Better than buckshot, but that isn't really saying much. Flechette, even ignoring that it's basically worse buckshot, needs a stun if it is ever going to be competitive.

No, it needs to be implemented per my initial suggestion:

https://gitlab.com/cmdevs/ColonialMarines/issues/2599

It can't be an effective mid range munition or T3 killer when it has shit pen, and it spreads out too quickly per its current implementation.

Also, with adequate materials engineering the major issues with flechettes can be addressed: it needs a strong, dense metal that allows it to not tumble so readily, retain/transfer kinetic energy well and prevent the dart shafts from deforming/bending from ignition forces; you solve those things, you're golden. I don't doubt that by the time of CM these issues are solvable: https://thefiringline.com/forums/showpo ... stcount=22

I honestly would be fine with Flechettes having a stun even with those buffs. Why? Flechettes are limited, like AP. It's a special ammo type you can only get from requisition, so it being objectively better than slugs in a lot of scenarios does not bother me at all.

I intended it to be a standard munition, but if the powers that be want to make it the equivalent of M41A AP they may as well give it a stun, or other significant buffs.

seems like a good alternative mix int for the buck+slug shotgun. Beat them down with buck and munch into their leftover hp with the flechettes.

Like I said, flechettes are ASHI shot. Another type of ASHI shot is glass shot. Both are awesome in theory and fucking stupid in practice.

Why?

The problem is that flechettes aren't currently well implemented, but a roadmap to usefulness already exists on the gitlab.

mostly because then id get credit for being a cool guy and getting a suggestion in :(

and also because it is made up of buckshot, which already exists, and a ball which is basically a worse slug, which also already exists, it -might- have been less finnicky to test and complete

If I recall, buck and ball was commonly issued to Irish units in the Federal Army during the American Civil War. A .56 caliber round slug with three or four buckshot pellets loaded in with it.

That being said, if you got hit by it at very close range (As the Confederates did, since, let's face it, the Irish were crazy enough to close in and use it), it would ruin your day.

Kind of makes me wonder what would happen if you gave it to Marines. Shells which fire slugs and less buckshot than usual at the same range as regular buckshot.

i mean buckshot rn is almost entirely the buck shell and not the additional buck so its basicly the same
