What do you expect from CL, and what can CL expect in return?

Post by ThePiachu » 27 Jun 2018, 03:44

So, I get that CL is a roleplay heavy role and a large part of it is sending faxes around, keeping WY informed of the situation and so on. But, what else do you expect of CL (other than "results"), and what can the CL hope to expect in return? Like, what are some things a CL has done in the past that were nice to see, and what sort of things have they received when they asked?

If I'm aware of the CL's existence when playing standard its an indicator of potential aside from the shitty shotgun toting frontline CL's.

I expect him to act like the slimy corporate suit he is to achieve his goals and for that he needs allies. Typically if WY is silent I feel the obvious goal for a CL would be to get an egg on board once beno lifecycle becomes known.

The best thing about playing CL is how some players will approach you for RP. Disgruntled marines, bored MT's and even the odd SO I always try to come up with some sort of a task for them to do and I feel it would be pretty cool to have a way to incentivise their cooperation with something else than money.

The one time I got a fax back from WY I had to bribe some charlie marines to escort me as the CO refused to assign me any, we went on a planetside mission and we all died opening ice tcomms to a beno flank. Had we succeeded I think it would be pretty great if the admins could give something useful to the marines.

I'd also really like to see more WY PMC's outside of the endgame almayer fight for added RP, maybe fighting alongside marines but trying to get eggs back etc, this could create tensions and infighting and potentially help marines when winrates are so low these days. But obviously first a CL needs to prove he isn't a shitter before that can happen with good faxes and conduct.

The CL can 99% of the time expect to be attacked by survivors located on Prison Station because they all have the whole same "Company used prisoners to breed Xenomorphs and you want revenge blah blah blah" backstory.

Otherwise I think the point of sending high quality faxes is so admins should reward the CL with something.

I like the idea of a quest giver corporate liaison. Give the marines some side-goals to achieve, it gets people interested in the CL and adds enjoyment for the marines. For ship-side crew you could ask the MTs to get you engineering equipment, and there's a world of possibilities with researchers. Basically, it's all about cooperation with other people.

After one round playing as a CL, I think one potential you have in that role is to help curb down on people being shitters in their role. We had an MP, the only MP in a round, that would insult their superior on general comms. If command would be busy dealing with the mission, there wouldn't really be anyone in the crew that could do anything about it, officially. Except for the CL, with the power to fax the High Command with a complaint form. So in this sense CL is like a bit of a command staff cleaner without any direct responsibilities.

I kinda agree with that. CL's should be looking to do things about crappy command staff, or staff in general. It's sorta their job in that sense. The other thing is helping out soldiers and recruiting them further into the company 'family', in which case you should be clever. Make sure they sign contracts that benefit you. Be slimy, but not TOO slimy, the kind of slimy that you can respect.

When I play CL I treat it as an opportunity to liven up other people's rounds. I'm usually sympathetic to the marine's situation, but CL's are really there to protect W-Y's interests above all else so that's always the underlying goal of my round. I try to incorporate MTs, CTs, medical and bored MPs into my hijinks as their well-meaning but incompetent corporate stooge. I'll offer other players W-Y's services, odd jobs, or try to bribe them into doing harmless stuff for me. It's always great when marines make good on their promises to bring me back Mr Wiggles and booze. Typically I'll start the round trying to futilely throw my corporate weight around until I "discover" the xeno threat and try to make sure W-Y still looks good at the end of it. If another player has an angle they're going for, like blaming W-Y for everything, I like to roll with it to keep up with whatever storyline they're going for. I think a good CL makes for fun viewing from deadchat so when I'm rocking my corporate suit I try be entertaining at least.

Okay, I've played a few rounds as a CL. I send about 5 faxes regularly each round, but most of the times I don't have anything to ask for from WY, other than "oh god, xenos are attacking, send an extraction team", or "we don't have any X role, we could use more X people / a synth". The first request I think is expected to appear like clockwork, while the second I don't think the admins can do much about.

So other than occasionally getting high command to ping someone for being a shitter at their job, what could the CL hope to get from WY realistically?

With the CL's new stuff they can give to Marines, (they're really powerful. Use them) it encourages keeping them in mind other than that guy who might subtly try to mess with the Marines.

One round I had enthralled half of Charlie by spreading highly-addictive meds around and forcing them into employment contracts and giving them loyalty implants and sending them on missions to retrieve stuff for cash and drugs. Nothing came of it since MPs metagamed the hell out of me, but it had a lot of potential.
