Friendly Fire and You

Post by Zelkova64 » 30 Jul 2018, 11:13

This isnt to bash friendly fire at all, Infact it can be hilarious at the worst of times but I want to ask who has moments of friendly fire you will never forget because it was either funny or horrendous regardless if it was accidental. My example below.

I was aiming at a carrier and poor Rick got blindsided by me [A medic] and my shotgun [with a perfect label for the moment].

Image

I felt really bad but my wife had to yell at me to breath because i was laughing to hard when someone posted this in Discord at the rounds end.

Edit: For a list of appropriately named items with label abuse by the rounds end.

Once during an SD defense we has three M56D's and I was sprouting patriotic nonsense through a megaphone when I get shoved and one of the MD56's shoot my head off.

I think my most memorable FF incident is the time someone hijacked my OW console to drop an OB on Bravo and Delta. Something like 10-12 marines got glassed without warning, the rest were either badly injured or lost all morale. Pretty sure that moment went down in legends somewhere.

Once I had set up an OB to cover our retreat. I was watching it through my binocs and the Queen showed up, standing directly on top the OB. I spent the next 5 minutes yelling at the SO to fire our OB. Suddenly the Queen runs off because we were making a counter push, we had retaken the ground we lost when the SO went "Oh, Fire the OB? OK." and gibbes our entire counter attack of about 13 marines.

Please tell me they were executed for neglect of duty by the CO. There needs to be a Vader-style punishment for anyone who messes up that badly.

the best friendly fire i remember wasnt even lethal friendly fire itself, but one of those dumb flash mortar rounds. landed too close to us and stunned a bunch of us, all the xenos noticed and took advantage of the situation, naturally

In the vein of "careless/deliberate OB firing on a marine position" I had a round earlier today (I think) where Delta's SL put a beacon down, ordered "full east" and then had us push into Lambda. Half the squad, including the SL himself, gets hit by the OB and either killed or seriously wounded. I recall being right on the edge of it and almost dying, only to spend the rest of the round wondering why my hand was constantly in pain even though it said it was fine. I was literally asking a doctor to scan my hand to see if something broke (because I didn't see what happened to me in the logs from the OB) when the round ended, but everyone was calling for the SO's death until it was revealed that the SL's beacon placement almost got us killed.

I think a lot of people seriously underestimate the delay between the SO pressing the button, and the time the OB takes to hit the ground. So much of it is just out of the SO's control, and in my experience the random scatter on each shot can be greater than the amount of offset you can enter.

In this case he had the SO fire "maximum East" and then had the squad charge due east, Grubstank. The SO wasn't paying attention.

Someone in the previous round (which ended a few minutes ago) decided to drop an incendiary OB right on the LZ/Telecoms on Big Red without warning as it was being overrun. 15-20 marines were roasted and the Alamo took off prematurely, dooming the survivors to a painful death. It somehow managed to top the incident where someone hijacked my console to nuke two squads, which is terrifying.

Best part was I was Charlie's SO and one of them said there were a bunch of marines coming up to CIC with weapons raised while the CO was questioning the Bravo SO to see who did it. I run up, shout "Potential mutiny inbound!" and the CO just pulls out Mateba and shoots the SO in the head because he no longer had time to figure out what was going on. I lost connection immediately after that, though, so...

My worst was my first time as SO. Turns out the Delta SL I had was a troll and in the middle of a evac I shot a OB on close to 17 or 20 marines. It killed so many wounded, it only took out 2 T1's and blew up most of the guys at the frontline. First and only time the CO had to kill both me and the Delta SL.

Once as an SL, I was lasing a group of xenos at the mouth of a cave on big red. The PO was flying in and about to send his payload...

And then I see two other SLs leading a charge past me towards the caves. The xenos all fled, and both the SLs died along with a few of their marines.

I remember a good old story about friendly fire and the heroic sacrifice of a rando PFC.
Back before they added the IFF Onto the M42A friendly fire incidents with it were usually just outright hilarious.
So one of those moments happened, Sniper was pretty shit at hitting benos and amazing at blowing off the heads of idle marines so durring a cave assault our squad leader and myself plus a couple PFC's were pushing while our sniper was firing behind us, One help intent shuffle with the squad leader later rando PFC's now suddenly headless while the squad leader and myself just kinda stared slackjaw'ed because both of us knew what would have happened had that one heroic PFC i can't remember the name haden't helpshuffled our squad lead.
Help shuffling saves lives extremely rarely people, Help shuffle today and piss everyone off but that one dude you actually save with it.
And yes i later did find out our sniper was actually aiming at the head the whole time for the "extra damage".

200 IQ marines aim for the head, so that when they do FF other marines, they only take a burst before they drop, instead of multiple bursts to the chest which reduces the amount of bullets flying at the target.

That way less bullets go into friendlies and more bullets go downrange.

That reminds me. I once took a (more or less) point-blank buckshot to the groin. I barely had time to shout about FF before I dropped dead. I was so pissed when that happened because it took a while for anyone to get around to patching me up.

Aiming for the head does do additional damage if i recall correctly, It's just that the damage boost is so small that you're only ever hurting marines significantly more than you would be beno's.

A shot to the head of a marine usually either kills them instantly with a decap or causes a head fracture which alone is also enough to just outright kill someone where as a shot to head on a beno just deals a little more damage that will more than likely not even matter.

I believe the head is also armored less for marines over the chest too, God help those brave marines that take headbands into battle.

Theres a video on youtube of me trying to hold the inner SD in our last moments before xenos came to munch on us. And I FF'd like 3 dudes in a row with the Mateba trying to hit aliens. Yeah its a good meme.
