How to impress people as command

Post by mizolo » 29 Nov 2018, 14:01

Rule #1: Salute and maintain attention until the superior officer in the room addresses you

Rule #2: Be competent (kinda hard for most people)

Rule #3: Tell the commanding officer what's going on at your station OFTEN

Rule #4
Don't be that one guy who immediately loses his cool and starts all-capsing into comms and marking Insub two minutes into landing.

Rule #3a

call out the location of the drop pod. where it currently is, where its currently going. Lord knows, you'll impress people at how *smoooth* your op is going. People in hanger? not bitching under your watch. Your squads? they now know when to send there wounded/dead, and the general flow of battle. Call it on your squad comms, call it on your general comms. Tell everyone everywhere "HEY, the boats here!"

...

But seriously, does uh, anyone know the way out?!

Rule #2a: read your squad's fucking radio feed at all times, and pay extra attenton to the small text. PFCs would rather unga than type messages to CIC, so if they're taking the time to talk to you, there's a good chance it's something important. Respond actively. If there's something else in CIC that needs your attention, then multitask. This is the bare minimum required to be a decent SO.

Rule #2b: know the state of your squad at all times, and frequently refresh the overwatch console; if somebody shows up as dead, jump to their cam and arrange their defib ASAP. You'll have your marines' gratitude - especially from the one whose sprite was covered by a crusher corpse.

And most important rule: Don't meme. I will go nuts if CO/XO/SO shits out two memes in a row.

Yeah, it's one thing to meme as a Pfc. It's expected (to a certain degree... and compensated for...) but if you do it as a Staff Officer, Staff Sergeant, or any Ensign... expect Command to immediately lose trust in you to a degree and, if you keep it up, begin to get on your ass for it.

Example: Making a joke about Jones moving around and managing to get in strange places is fine once... after three times though... it begins to become extremely childish and annoying.

Also, can confirm saluting actually improves relationship. It's a simple act, but it shows respect and willingness to both roleplay/act your rank and cooperate beyond just talking.
Also, can confirm people who actually TELL command what the hell is going on are very highly regarded.

Personally, I hate it when SOs get annoyed at me, a CPT (read: Commanding Officer) for getting on their squad cams ... why?.. because they aren't giving me the information I need. Monitoring your squad is one thing. Using that info to tell the squad and help them is another thing... But informing over command comms as a whole is amazingly helpful and saves time/effort. Commanding an operation can come down to 3 minutes of choosing the next step..
