APC: Good idea? Bad idea?

Post by Bulaven » 03 Dec 2018, 10:03

Now, I know I haven't been around all that much, so I am a little slow on the uptake. But, I heard through the grapevine that someone in that big ol' box o' bureaucracy is planning on working on an armored personnel carrier for the Marines.

Obviously, this could go a few different ways.

Firstly, it could go something along the lines of the Longstreet. Kind of good, kind of horrible, but it's a worthy work in progress.

Or, it could be a terrific idea, which ends up working as intended the first time.

Or it could be a mistake which causes much more trouble than it's worth, kind of like the boonie hat argument. Except, instead of a hat, it's a tin can full of meat. Meat that is trapped and screaming as it is mercilessly devoured.

With all scenarios coming earmarked for the shit-show that is the USCM behaving like fucking Soviet Conscripts who've been handed an armored car without a clue as to how it works, I have decided to omit this as an eventuality unworthy of its own particular branch.

Thoughts?

Personally, I think that the game currently works best when it's simply Marines Vs Xenos. I think adding a vehicle into the mix completely changes the dynamic of the game in a way I don't particularly enjoy.

However I do realise that the game is ever changing (as we can see we the new xenomutation system) and perhaps the tank/APC will one day be a perfect fit for the game, but for now? Hard pass.

I think certain maps could be designed for use with things like apcs and tanks. Like if a new map came out with it being designed for an APC to be widely used, but only on that map, I think it would be cool. Same thing with tanks.

An APC gives marines a few things they really lack:

1. Another front that can be held with an understaffed squad which won't break instantly
2. A better and heavier FOB outside LZ1
3. A way to ignore tcomms; opening up the entire map for marine FOBs, breathing completely new life into the meta
4. A way to ferry wounded from the front back to a landing zone quickly

The APC provides utilitarian options that should shore up vital areas if used well, and completely changes how marines can play each round.

its an alright notion. a vehicle without the deletion-from-distance via main cannon problem that makes the tank problematic, while still reusing much of the tank's code and features so it doesn't go to waste

An APC sounds like a good idea, but I think it will rely heavily on who operates it. Just like the tank, if you had a bunch of smoothbrains operating it, it was useless. I've seen a tank get near destroyed by an elder runner.

Yeah. Hence, the 'Soviet Conscript' comment.

I think this is a good idea but since the vehicle is a personnel carrier it would be really difficult to not have an entire squad instantly popping up outside of a hive of xenos. Perhaps a vehicle that moves between point A and point B on the Z level, maybe a train or a tram that needs repairing but once fixed it can carry marines through those long distances to a set point(s).
This would ensure that marines can't just roll up to the xenos, go all out on them and then roll away.
When the OB misfires and xenos are on your doorstep.

The new dam map from what I've read is FREAKING HUGE! Maybe this would be a good map that when its in play allows the tank or maybe an APC to be available to take advantage of its open area's, also a armored vehicle would provide a good strongpoint for marines to rally on due to the wide openness of the map not allowing many defensive position.

The USCM are mechanized infantry and rely on vehicles for transportation and extra firepower. A ground-based vehicle not only aids in creating a coordinated fighting force, but changes up the Meta from 19th-century line infantry into a more modern combined arms approach. If this is supposed to be a military simulation then I see no harm in adding a support vehicle, especially when it’s a staple of the lore as well.

I don't know if it would make sense, because APCs are pretty heavy like mini tanks, but it would be hilarious if a crusher rammed an APC from the side that it would flip it. Especially if marines were ont eh inside and they just all went flying out if it got flipped.

APC will probably be good for Dam, since the map is basically just huge roads. I'm down with it on that map, not sure if it'd work out for other maps, i don't see it being useful on LV or prison, perhaps on big bread or ICE it could work. Something to make the marines more mobile on ICE is a good idea.
