Going planetside without the need to do law enforcement is grounds for neglect of duty, at least accordingly when I ahelped for something.
When my usually pro-corporate character was swayed into believing W-Y was doing crimes against humanity, the CO said that investigation was approved when I briefed him on it, and I faxed HC a briefing of the situation. Shortly after I ahelped and was told both that it was neglect of duty, and that they didn’t recommend sending an MP but instead asking a marine, which didn’t go anywhere as the marines weren’t doing too ducky. Anyway, that’s the impression I got.
Hopefully Emerald will get around to answering my question about this topic in Rules Clarifications soon. Some CO's like to use MP's like the Custodes from 40k. I.e. we have a designated function (police the Almayer) but if there's some miscellaneous task that Command, namely the CO themselves, want taken care of in trustworthy manner they often come to us.
I love that as an MP main. It breaks monotony without needing some admin event. Some staff, though, take the view that they should exclusively be law enforcement. Which I understand but frankly the idea of MP's being the select few marines that command
absolutely, totally trusts and can therefore be involved in sensitive, special issues is much more fun on top of being practical and, in my opinion, realistic.
Like, what did the staff you spoke to expect to come of asking an unga to handle that? That they'd drop their helmet and pickup a fedora and go noir detective for some issue they hadn't RP'd at all before getting told to?
If I can change topic from that, I want to say here that I think all CIC officers should get the MP channel in their headsets. I.e. SO's and the XO, in addition to the CO. Because from what I've seen staff enforces their loyalty; they cannot mutiny. As it stands now, an SO is the perfect fly on the wall for misbehaving squads. If, however, they want to let MP's know about what's going on they have spill the information all over the place by either using Almayer or Command comms. If you have a proactive CMP or CO they can work around this by handing out MP Keycards but I've yet to see that happen. I personally had Mueller pass me a keycard when I SO'd Charlie one round when they were being shit and it helped me help them preemptively stomp out seditious behavior. Plus it was fun.
Mueller's player, Bancrose, though is staff. I've already written about
that. He was a line MP at the time and I personally would have never done what he did without superior approval. I'd love to, some rounds, but again there's that apprehension about any slip up or unwritten rules.
