Well if you dont want the spec to lead you could try keeping the SL alive.

Honestly. Its typically better to follow orders and stick with your SL or aSL then wander off. It makes organization easier and allows for your leaders to actually get shit done.

Unga can get you pretty far, but actually following your leaders, be it SL aSL or CO, get you so much further.

To be fair, it is annoying if your SL is always assigning themselves to the QRF and fighting at the front of the group and inevitably dying in some unga charge like a big PFC with binoculars they never use. Maybe if everyone was a PFC then everyone would stay together.

Personally I always attach my spec to a frontline squad because getting PFCs to stay on the FOB is hard enough I do agree its the attitudes of specs that are worrying but its not going to change when rolling spec works like it does now

I've suggested this before: make smart Gunner second in command, or make a dedicated radio guy with the beacons and binocs second in command

Spec shouldn't be 2iC, I agree, but as of right now they are and they should suck it up and shoulder the responsibility. It's not hard to tell your squad "go here" or "follow me" or "don't run headlong into that choke and get gassed". If some don't follow you, that's simply beyond what you or anyone else can do. However, if a spec refuses to do the basic responsibilities of their role then they should be held to a greater OOC standard than a simple insubordinate PFC simply because of how game-changing they can be.

I had a round where the SADAR specialist was the only person of rank in their squad, immediately shouted at the SO that they weren't going to lead their squad, and wasted an hour trying to hump a Predator's leg while majority of the Marine force fought and died in a chokepoint. When they arrived, they helped the Marines make incredible gains but it was already too late since Marines already incurred heavy casualties thanks to the spec dicking around.

Smartgunner would make the best aSL because a smart SG will have Marines in front of them, and an even smarter one will already have found themselves a pair of binoculars.
