Sentry bunkers?

Post by Jakers457 » 13 Oct 2016, 06:09

So, I've seen this attempted now and then by certain engineers, I've even tried it once myself while being woefully under supplied. And not one of them has been featured in a winning battle from my experience. Admittedly, in firefights where they were used, it was our flanks that crumbled but you could also say the limited sight lines was a factor in this.

So thoughts? Do they work? Do you have any particular designs or layouts that make a bunker work?

I do a setup of 3 Plasteel facing forward, Then 3 Reinforced tables left and right, then a plasteel in the middle a bit back for the sentry, This is a very strong defensive hardpoint if the marines dont abandon the sentry, and really easy for you expand defenses from.
If you mean walls and stuff? I would never do that, maximizing your sentrys firing lines is important.

Would you set the sentry to 360 degrees then? Or only do so if you have to retreat?

Ideally you only 360 if you CANNOT recover the sentry, or the marines are doing a bad job keeping it safe.

And they always fail at that.

People always go on how a sentry is worth a squad of marines, and then just leave it to die the moment the aliens get too scary.

I swear, I feel like I'm the only one who goes out of his way to try and protect and save sentries, and in some cases perform my last stands with a sentry or two next to me, holding out to the last breath. You'd be surprised how easy it is to scare off aliens as a lone marine if you have a sentry to watch your back.. Or 2... Or in one case of mine, 3.

Better to die protecting the sentries than to run off and expect them to keep the xenos busy on their own (which they do... For a few seconds).
Sometimes, bravery comes from the most unlikely sources.

3 Sentrys can watch themselves until they run out of ammo, but 1 and to a lesser extent two wont last too long versus a crusher with patience or the queen, And 360 is easily outranged by spitters/praes.
Sentrys need backup to do their job, like most of us.
Unless you have a shitton of sentrys then they just laugh at the ayys attempts to stop them.
Someday I'll build a cube of 8 sentrys and stand in the middle laughing at the ayys
