Recording Device

Post by Biolock » 26 Nov 2016, 18:39

There are so many places I could have put this topic, but since it's predator specific, I figured I might put it here for discussion.
The Universal Recorder, for whatever reason, doesn't work.

Countless rounds I've tried to record a marine saying something like, "Yo, come over here!" or something of the like so that, in the future, I could play it near a marine to lure him out into the darkness. To my dismay, the device doesn't actually record input anymore. It's incredibly disappointing because I thought it'd be an interesting way to manipulate SS13 mechanics in a lore friendly way.

I went to the top, pressing the issue with Apop and Feweh, asking them as to why the device doesn't work. I'd assumed it was removed in order to prevent marines and xenos from having tea parties together... but here's the strange part, both of them were confident that the Universal Recorder still worked.... so what the hell happened?

Yes, this could have gone in to bugs, but it doesn't appear to be a bug.

Yes, this could have gone into suggestions, but that forum is already clogged enough and I'm not sure if it was intentional.

And yes it could have gone other places too.

I'd like to either see the preds given a device similar to the UR, or determine why it no longer works. It would definetely remove the need for the translator if it worked the same as it always had, which I don't know is a good thing, but that's not the issue at hand.
I'm stressing way too hard about what to put here, so I'm just gonna leave it blank.... or....

Tbh, preds do have a recorder and it'd be nice if it was implemented to cheese / store / speak with. Although, it'd take some coding work to be done and I suppose it won't be in the best interest of all to have devs working on THAT instead of other features.
CM was obviously inspired by Starcraft: Ghost opening. At least when marines takes too long to deploy.

To my knowledge, the recorder works if you use the :w speech command (the same that you use for the voice analyzer for voice-activated grenades and bombs). Though that said, its not the same as it works on other servers. So I don't know if it's intentional.

Personally what I always did as a pred was use /me commands to fill in the gaps of anything I can't do. If I hear a marine say something, I'll just /me mimicing it and occasionally butcher sentences to get my meaning across.

It wouldn't be half bad to have a device (That works better than the crappy translator, mind you, so people actually believe it.) that records, then "Says" phrases as if the recorded person had said it.

However, I also propose a hologram, or some way to lure people in by faking one of the Marines. There would be tell-tale stuff, like flickers. However, dead bodies will be difficult to make the cut, being that we usually leave a lot of wounds, or decapitate them, which is evident either right off the bat through blood on the sprite or a missing head, or when examined. Examined holograms would have "X looks strange....".

Though interesting, it doesn't seem very lore friendly (to my knowledge, at any rate), and might be better off in it's own thread if you want to pursue it.

I've found using the corpses of marines slain by FF/Xenos works pretty well for baiting, and even some of the NPC colonist corpses have worked fairly well as traps on more than one occasion.

It's not lore friendly as in the lore, people can hear what direction a sound comes from, and don't have outside knowledge of stuff like Predators. On CM, some form of way to draw people in would be nice, and Predators do have the technology to make holograms. On the occasion, it's more effective to make it clear that a corpse is, well, a corpse, as people will try to grab it to clone it.
