Of course! It is very important that staff, donors, and players all are held to the same standards mutually agreed upon for the server. Abusing mechanics or situations just because you can in order to have power over others is harmful and toxic, especially if it results in making fellow players feel less inclined to continue playing on the server.
Do you understand how the Battlefield Execution functions?
Battlefield executions are simultaneously a tool, a threat, and a potentially destructive force. The commander should only use his right to BE in situations where a character is clearly an active threat to the round/operation that must be dealt with immediately to prevent further harm; though with agreement in LOOC by both parties some other situations open up for RP purposes. Abusing your right to end another player's round is harmful to everyone in the end, yourself included, and in that way can become only a weapon of destruction to the quality of the round.
Many years ago when I played on Goonstation nearly every day, I had a Head of Security whitelist. I slightly abused this role for a time by immediately hunting for traitors just trying to spawn their gear in maintenance with the thermal vision, but eventually I realized on my own I was actually making both the traitor player's round less interesting, and the round itself less interesting as a whole by doing so, and thus became a lot more aware of when I wasn't giving another player a fair deal. The same line of thinking certainly applies to the BE mechanic in CM; to end a player's round, even with xenos available to the dead, is something to used with only the utmost respect to the victim player.
Some situations I might utilize Battlefield Executions include: Active and immediate sedition, self defense, active and knowledgeable griefing by a player that is harmful in a large scale to the marines, or a player actively undermining command's ability to lead the marine round.
Do you understand you are not above Marine law, or allowed to enforce it yourself?
It is the job of the MPs to enforce marine law, and if they are available they should be called upon. It definitely is not the Commander's job to run about the ship chasing criminals when there is a battle to be fought, nor to himself toss them into the brig and determine their fate.
What do you think is the job of a Commander?
The Commander is first and foremost the leader of the operation. However at the same time he is also one of the prime motivators of roleplay on the ship and ground, diplomat with event or response forces, and morale determiner of the marines under his command. An active and interested CO simply makes for better rounds overall, keeping his command staff, ship staff, and marine troops interested and actively participating in his plans.
That said, no man can do everything, and no man should do everything. If the CO were meant to do all the jobs on the ship, he would be the only marine role available! Hence, while he should be the prime motivator and director, he should always be willing and ready to delegate and allow for decentralized command in order to let the men and women beneath him to shine in the roles they enjoy most. My personal opinion is that the CO should never be completely silent; often taking a back seat and giving little pieces of advice or orders here and there, but always listening and ready with something.
Lastly, the CO is currently best equipped to recognize individual performance and effort via the medal system; it's always lovely to see your name pinned there at round end as having done something awesome, or sometimes incredibly silly or dumb, and knowing others get to see it too.
If a member of your staff is disobeying orders, how would you handle it?
As most other applications agree, it really depends greatly upon the situation, and the position the person in question holds.
Players will disobey orders for a wide variety of reasons. Malice, depression, confusion, fear, and often knowledge. The man in the ivory tower cannot always know exactly what is best for all the people beneath, and no-one knows every thing there is to know, but everyone knows something someone else doesn't.
Generally speaking, it is best to be patient and attempt to discern which of these motivators are playing a part in the situation, then attempt better communication or support in order to reaffirm either the rightfulness of your command, or recognize that you in fact may be the less knowledgeable one.
Some examples:
- A SO has gone down to the planet without authorization, and is refusing to come back up to aid in a understaffed CIC: The SO might be actively disloyal and uncaring about your orders, though potentially the player may be wanting to do a little ground command and just have not gotten the chance to do so. If the former, it may be best to deploy MPs; if the latter, compromising may give you a very active and interested ground LT, turning a negative situation into a positive.
- A crewmember is being actively antagonistic towards other crew: They may or may not have reason to do so; attempt discussion first, and if that fails send in the MPs or launch an ahelp.
- An SL is refusing a direct order during the operation: Re-examine the situation; perhaps the SL knows something you do not. Otherwise, attempt discussion, and if that fails send in the MPs.
Why should you be whitelisted?
I have been an active CM player for just shy of a year now, playing very regularly with occasional breaks when life gets in the way. I am also very active in the community, though more on the discord than on the forums. Being among the whitelisted COs would also allow me to better discuss the role itself with other players, staff, and fellow COs.
I've seen and been under the command of many different types of COs, with a reasonable number of XO rounds and SL rounds, and while some do offer great character and situations to remember, others often seem a bit bland in my opinion, and if whitelisted I hope to be a regularly remembered CO who can provide interesting and morale-boosting rounds for the marines in the face of the xeno hordes.
My character, Stefan, does draw a lot from the sort of person I wish I was. As XO he has a great deal of respect for his 'family' of marines. He's not new to combat, and understands the fear and desperation that can drive men to panic or disobey, and regularly clashes with others who disrespect those who have fallen in the line of duty. He is not a 'shoot first and ask questions later' sort of man either, only really holding a firm anger at CLF forces for their hostility towards non-combatants, and a distrust for Weyland-Yutani and modern megacorporate entities in general.
Despite this, he is a firm patriot and believer in the American ideals. He knows and experiences fear, but it does not control him like certain COs, and though he would like to be down with his men fighting the good fight side-by-side and keeping their spirits up, he recognizes that sometimes the most important pieces have to do the most banal jobs.
Furthermore I want to try and 'poke' at the meta of CM rounds when I can, trying to find new solutions to problems the different maps present rather than just declaring LZ2 as the FOB to 'shake things up'. Sometimes I'll command from on high in CIC blaring orders to squads to perform the best strategy one can with a massive ball of derp and unga that is a marine push, sometimes I will be down on the ground fighting up front and leading men to see heroism first-hand, sometimes I'll just go down to observe the situation and see what works.
(I'm also told I can be pretty robust, and we need some more robust commanders to lead the bayonet charges from the trenches.)
I am very interested to hear and respond with my thoughts on any example situation, whether it be about things on the Almayer or on the ground! So please, ask away!
