Eh, I have doubts for this suggestion. With the current map Big Red, comms isn't usually a problem (unless of course a baldie's is tasked on fixing it) It's also very nicely secured and hard to breach through unless Marines get rekt.
This in my eyes is a pretty gimmicky idea. Unless of course, a rework is to be made for comms in general. At the current moment, a radio op is useless and won't do much.
The only good thing I see is if the radio op can hear other squad comms so that they can organize an assault together and or talking to command for immersion.

Re: Radio backpack
While I like this idea, I don't know how well this would work with the lore and how vast of a gameplay change this would be.

It actually well exist in the lore. Comm Tech are officers charged with outbound communications inside operations and generally made to contact dropships and the likes for deployment, artillery, etc.

CM was obviously inspired by Starcraft: Ghost opening. At least when marines takes too long to deploy.

Re: Radio backpack
Jesus, I would LOVE to play as "radio-man". +1 for this. Also, it will help MUCH on Snow Colony, which I currently hate to play because of Comms issues. So, even more +1s from me!

Re: Radio backpack
+1 I'M REVIVING THIS FROM THE DEAD
I want to bump this and add to this.....
There needs to be a dedicated Radio man rather than to have the SL himself do the OB, Logistics, and Air support himself. SL's should focus on leading his squad than trying to micro manage a lot of things at once;
So with addition to this Radio Pack the SL can delegate logistics and air support to another person while he focuses on leading on the ground, The radio man will have more time and focus on communicating with the PO and SO's for support rather than the SL who needs to talk to and manage his squad it would make sense for the SL to have one anyways.
This suggestion wasn't needed since there was not a lot of things to worry about air wise when it was posted but now with the addition of PO's and gunship I think this is a valid thing to add to the game being both RP friendly and interesting game play wise.
(Personally I just want a guy with a Backpack radio sprite running around calling broken arrow).

Re: Radio backpack
Awesome idea! Like the poor guy that goes higher up on the ridge line to radio to Whiskey Outpost only to get snatched up by the flying bug! Give them a radio in one hand and a SMG in the other and march to glory!

Re: Radio backpack
I'd totally love to be a radio man. That would be hype.

Squad leaders are swamped with shit they have to micro manage, and that's a major factor in the role often going unfilled. There's already a built-in system where you can listen to radio traffic via proximity with another spaceman, so whenever a squad leader wants to listen to the command channel directly they can walk over to their radio man and listen to direct orders before dictating a response. When radios aren't set up properly you can still communicate with a single person in each squad, which makes a lot more sense than how things operate now.
Edit: Instead of having RO hand these out or putting in a new, separate marine class, just add the backpacks to the SL's locker or vendor. If the SL wants to juggle coms and command then he just wears the backpack and continues as he normally would. Or, if he's one to delegate, he can hand the radio off to a marine he trusts and has them act as his right hand in the field. Boom, options, what a wonderful thing eh?
