An update for the overwatch consoles
Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):The idea is to give an update to the overwatch console and to create one more item.
Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):This will help a LOT in the bridge to command the marines down in planetside and make them more eficientes.
Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):The idea is to have a map of the planet in the console and show in real time where is each marine (with dots and 1 color for each squad) and if it possible to show up the name of the marine when we place the mouse over the dot or/and to give each dot an unique img like a wrench for engis a bullet for regular marines etc.. , add one more cam to the spc , medic and engineer since there is not always a SL in each squad.
The new item idea is to have the same map as the overwatch console have but in a shape of a virtual map or a pair of augmented reality glasses for the SLs so they can coordinate each other , set some destinations , marks or even allow them to make areas and set them to "danger" zone or "objective 1 ".

Re: An update for the overwatch consoles
-1.this would cause WAY too much lag because the server has got to track every single marine player on a 70+ server.

This kind of things already exists in paradise and in TG , they don't make any lag as far i know.

Re: An update for the overwatch consoles
It's a good idea, but we use much older and less optimized code than Paradise or TG and the more someone checks the console, the more lag it would generate. I doubt anyone on Paradise has to constantly keep tabs on 100+ people, much less 4 doing it at once.

What thing is this, exactly? I haven't seen this before.kael224 wrote:This kind of things already exists in paradise and in TG , they don't make any lag as far i know.

It already does. Suit sensors already do this.Joe4444 wrote:-1.this would cause WAY too much lag because the server has got to track every single marine player on a 70+ server.
On many other codebases the station map is displayed at crew monitors. And a dot for each person with suit sensors activated is overlayed on top of that map using the cartesian coordinates provided by the suit sensors. It seems like a lot of work, and it seems processing intensive I know, but it really isn't. It's just a fancy combination between the crew monitor and the map.Sailor Dave wrote:What thing is this, exactly? I haven't seen this before.

Re: An update for the overwatch consoles
but tracking it every second and moving it? suit sensors at best tell you where a person is in a general area(not that it helps because half the map on LV is called W-Y compound). The suggestion suggests it tracks all the marine players on the south side of the river every second and updating it onto 4 overwatch consoles at most.wastedfate wrote:It already does. Re: An update for the overwatch consoles
Well it hardly has to update every server tick. I don't know how server-intensive it is to loop over a list of all players, I would guess not very since it seems like something you'd want to do now and then. I don't know the inner workings of BYOND, but I don't see why all 4 consoles couldn't share the same information.

Re: An update for the overwatch consoles
You're really just overlaying the suit sensor coordinates onto a map. The overwatch consoles already track these coordinates to tell you how far each marine is from their SL.Joe4444 wrote:but tracking it every second and moving it? suit sensors at best tell you where a person is in a general area(not that it helps because half the map on LV is called W-Y compound). The suggestion suggests it tracks all the marine players on the south side of the river every second and updating it onto 4 overwatch consoles at most.

Re: An update for the overwatch consoles
+1, it's basically a Crew Monitoring console added to the Overwatch consoles.
It's make keeping track of Marines easier.

Re: An update for the overwatch consoles
maybe at the least, add where the SL is in real time on a map of the LV (?)

Re: An update for the overwatch consoles
actually it would be less laggy if you make a list for people with squad IDs e.g add this person to list when putting on a delta marine ID or Bravo ETC ETC. It shouldn't be as laggy and the crew monitor might already have this code on your codebase but disabled.

Neutral leaning towards -1. Crew monitoring console does this.

Re: An update for the overwatch consoles
I had this same idea a while back. And I agree with the coding, it shouldn't be that intensive on the CPU because the crew monitor already tracks the marines positions. +1

+1 only if performance footprint is negligible.

Re: An update for the overwatch consoles
+1. Just have it update when a player clicks the "refresh" button. nobody needs a live feed, they just need the general gist of where everyone generally is on a map so they can coordinate the marine forces somehow.
Gaze upon me,
for I have wandered deep into the ancient tombs of knowledge to which lie madness and sorrow, cleansing a path for all those who walk behind me...
...
But seriously, does uh, anyone know the way out?!

Yeah we son't even need a live feed , but at last some landmarks for the SL so they can make something coordinated.

Re: An update for the overwatch consoles
The map on paradise updates every few seconds. Also, this isn't something that is intensive to do; the code already tracks locations of everyone, just overlay the coordinates on a map.
