UPP Personal Speak Russian By Default

Summary: Make it that all UPP soldiers will speak in Russian as their default language, but they can speak English by including the :i (or whatever the command is) before they speak.

Benefits: Making speaking English a conscious choice will put more weight behind communicating to non-UPP personal, while also meaning during surprise situations that UPP personal will speak Russian instead of English. If you ambush a UPP Soldier they will likely be screaming in their native tongue, not English.

it is an interesting idea. the lore claims that the upp is an interstellar communist state that insulates itself from outside influences, and while they could have conquered or absorbed english-speaking worlds, you cannot expect that it would be their universal language. more likely it would indeed be something like russian or chinese, or an evolved blend of both.

this will of course raise significant complexities. such as who in the upp team gets to understand english in order to interact with marines or demand their surrender? only the squad leader? randomized? and on the flipside, who on the uscm crew may have the language skills to speak and understand upp talk, the command staff, the CL, who else?

well, despite it being an interesting idea, sticking to one language helps facilitate player interaction and roleplaying, which seems to be a priority around here

This sounds like it would make things interesting. You have a group of people who speak a language you don't understand and also don't understand you. Would make, for example, a CL much more useful requiring them to talk to the UPP and perhaps even use WY's power to try and influence the soldiers not to disrupt their operation.

The UPP is a coalition force of basically every 80's Communistic country. If anything, they'd be speaking a slash of Chinese and Russian.

English is better as a default. Otherwise potential RP moments with the marines might suffer. We saw this rather heavily with the Iron Bears, and the mistakes we made with them.

If they want to have a private conversation that the marines cannot understand, it should be a conscious decision on the side of the UPP player.
