System for a Queen to Observe the Hive
Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):
- Provide the queen with a security camera/AI-styled manner of observing her underlings.
Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):
This will improve the information collection process of the hive, allowing micromanaging Queens to make more informed decisions.
Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):
- Queens are given a new verb, 'Observe Xeno' or something of the like. This can drain plasma or cost nothing at all, as a Queen's time is already valuable.
- The verb will give the Queen the vision of a xenomorph of her personal choosing.
Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it):
I'm not going to pretend to know what I'm doing in terms of coding. Gentlefood and \\N had the idea of giving the Queen total vision, using pieces from AI code of yore in order to grant the Queen the ability to jump her vision to that of any xeno without a great deal of lag.

+1
Lore friendly and very useful. Instead of questioning larva on the Sulaco, you can just jump there yourself and see what it sees. That can be huge for planning assaults. Maybe even giving the queen a OBSERVE link whenever a xeno talks in hivemind, kind of like ghosts have when they observe.
In terms of implementation, a verb that centers client vision on a mob could work. I don't remember enough about how vision works anymore, but possibly modifying the queen's vision to imitate the mob itself could function? Unlike SL cameras, it should create no lag no matter how many xenos are present in the game (it will only resolve tracking once, when the queen uses the verb).

Yeah, it makes sense for the Queen to have this ability, given that she is the focal point of a Hivemind. I can see how there'd be problems in implementing it, but I think the Security Camera/Helmet Camera system is in need of a reform anyway.

Re: System for a Queen to Observe the Hive
I remember there was a suggestion for Overwatch to be able to watch every single marine instead of just squad leaders, but it was rejected due to lag. If that's the case then I don't see this suggestion getting approved.
I like the idea, though.

Re: System for a Queen to Observe the Hive
Aliens have 1 queen but there is four BOs which is the reason we can't observe all marines. Back to the topic we should probably give observing a limit. I've seen Queens able to talk with their aliens and know their location too which meant they could observe in the Alien campaign in alien vs predatorsEdgelord wrote:I remember there was a suggestion for Overwatch to be able to watch every single marine instead of just squad leaders, but it was rejected due to lag. Yeah, Gentlefood was talking about that with \\N. Apparently, their idea of doing things wouldn't lag so badly.Edgelord wrote:I remember there was a suggestion for Overwatch to be able to watch every single marine instead of just squad leaders, but it was rejected due to lag. Re: System for a Queen to Observe the Hive
Possible we could do it with T3s, I'd be hesitant to do it with too many others, to limit lag.

Why DO cameras cause lag, anyway?

Re: System for a Queen to Observe the Hive
If cameras cause lag maybe have it possible for a Queen to "select" a xeno as their camera and have that stay that way until the xeno dies or if the Queen decides the switch the viewpoint based on a timer? That might reduce lag by making only one active camera for the Queen to look through. I'm just concerned that on some highpop rounds there might be enough T3s to cause major lag.

Re: System for a Queen to Observe the Hive
I would like to point out that a queen observing would have nothing to do with cameras. Cameras are specifically made to work with the AI and viewing screen/monitors. Sticking cameras in to xenos so the queen can observe them would be a really clumsy way to go about this.

Re: System for a Queen to Observe the Hive
Would the "observe" verb for the Queen limit the view to the xeno's darkvision and would it then cancel out that view if the xeno died?

Yes and yes, though it would largely depend on implementation.Arachnidnexus wrote:Would the "observe" verb for the Queen limit the view to the xeno's darkvision and would it then cancel out that view if the xeno died?

+1. Let's give the Queen some awareness. She needs to know what goes on at the front lines.

Re: System for a Queen to Observe the Hive
Honestly this would be really great if we got it in, or something similar to the blob overview. +1
