Ever since CO's were implemented, the XO role has gotten a ton more use, due to people not being able to just pick CO anymore and be *the boss*, and due to most rounds not having an actual CO, I believe people have come to see XO's as the new *boss*. My thoughts on what the CO should be doing when they're around is simply Overwatching the entire operation, and adjusting the decisions of your Command staff to better suit the needs of your men, because when it comes down to it, the CO is there to make sure no one fucks up on the Command side of things, or simply just tell all of their orders and ideas to the XO, so they can then scream said orders/ideas at the men, because lord knows having an XO and a CO barge into your squad comms at the same time basically means you'll be met with some incoherent sentences that end up being mixed orders, and then you'll probably be missing out on a supply drop too.

Commanders, in charge? Or just decision making.

Honestly I've had no trouble with XO's Order/ CO's Orders, I'm pretty sure the XO is just to help make big decisions such as preforming an assault, like they want their right hand man to give them advice whether or not they do said command.

We all know that CO's need one thing and one thing only. BE the CO. What im saying here is that they need to take a type of leadership role to let the grunts know they are the one who run this ship. Yeah giving orders and being the one of the two officers to authorize executions is fun and all true. But why not do more with that power? Anything is possible in arrpee,I say we give more leeway for CO's to be the commander they fully need to be and with them being whitelisted now they should get some minor rule changes to see fit to the position.

Honestly, I prefer that COs be the ones that handle all the order giving and operation leading. The XO is supposed to be the commander's assistant, his right hand man, his trusty sidekick whom he can dump all the burdens and unimportant jobs upon while he takes care of the serious stuff.
After all, when a player goes CO, he is mentally prepared to lead a platoon. When a player goes XO, they are expecting to play more of an assisting role for the commander (or at least I do). COs being as uncommon as they are now means that going XO becomes a gamble of if you are going to have to take charge or not, and no doubt there will be times when you regret getting the job of XO and have to handle a small army of trigger happy loonies until a CO wakes up to take over and allow you to do the job you were expecting.
When I go XO, it is for the purpose of ensuring all stations of the ship are running so that the CO doesn't have to. Let him do all the decision making while I do all the little things here and there across the ship to ensure healthy logistics.

I see alot of people going XO to lead marines as CO is now a whitelist only job, and after they've had a bit of practice doing this with the role, they've made a CO application. I feel roughly 50% of XO players play as you detailed Reno, and the other half are just trying out for CO.

I think the CO is more macro command, and the XO is better suited for micro command in a perfect world.

Since I've yet to make my CO application, I play an XO, Titus Moreno. I do the sort of overarching command you think a CO should, with the micro-managing if there's no other bridge staff to assist me.
Considering no two rounds will go exactly the same, it's a case of adaptability, and if you play on lowpop or not.

CO is totally in charge. Their word is LAW and they have authority to execute those who disobey.
They are still held by Marine Law, but they have final say.
