The three boiler tactic.

Post by caleeb101 » 25 Mar 2017, 15:57

How does one escape and avoid this? I've seen it happen three times today in each round I have played and it's mauled the marines to pieces. Just keep globbing and allow T-1's to put pressure on marines until they inevitably muck up and eat the gas. Then scoop up the victory when the numbers get low. I know it isn't against the rules but it sure is broken as all hell. So yeah. How would you people suggest avoiding this?

Shoot yourself first so xenos can't kill you.

A good push is all that it takes to kill a boiler. That or a competent SADAR using AT since boilers have terrible movement speed and can't dodge for their life.

You get either a Sniper or someone whos not a Wuss to push through the front with Buckshot
LOOC Nyxia 'Fifty' Cals "I swear to god if I haven't broken a bone to this moment. I need to head back to get my replacement Titanium plates."
LOOC John '???' Baker? "Better get running"

Honestly, the reason why the boiler is sooo powerful is because the gas is bugged out to hit a person multiple times if the gas cloud or the person are subject to any movement.

Normally, boiler gas does 20%-50% of a persons HP, but if you touch multiple clouds or update your movement in a cloud, it keeps triggering.

If it didnt trigger on movement updates, boilers would be a lot less instant kill and more area denial, which means other T-3's would move into the spots.

Theres really nothing much you can really do to counter it unless you have a very mobile/aggressive marine core.

Boilers are relatively easy to defeat.

1a. Push after the bombardment and evade acid spray.
1b. Have other marines consistently driving off or intercepting any and all xeno escorts nearby.
2. Press any and all advantages, give no quarter.

The things to do against boilers are 3 in theory:
1.Have a sniper harass the boiler.
2.Do a flanking maneuver from behind the boiler.
3.Have a crazy marine suicide charge the boiler.
NO MERCY! NO RESPITE!

I usually suicide charge a boiler as a grunt because I think, is it not better to die killing a T3 than to die to a young runner alone?

There is still one strategy left that trumps the 3 boiler strategy and makes any marine team suicide in droves.

Be thankful they don't use that strategy... yet.

Ask for a rail scope more often as a rifle standard -- you're not likely to kill any boiler as a poor man's sniper, but the added pressure will slow them down enough to do something other than get pelted into oblivion by corrosive gas.

In contrast to what happened today to me, you get three boilers, you three see a boxed in formation of marines (behind barricades and closed false walls). There was nothing those poor marines could do in that situation, boilers banned poweraaaylming. Huehuehue.
Death, is just another part of life.

When you have more than 2 boilers, it can be a bit overkill at times. Not only is their gas deadly to the touch, but they can provide a nearly steady cloud of cover, making it hard for marines to see and easier for aliens to close the gap, let alone the fact that sentries will be made nearly useless when their cams are blocked by gas.

It isn't so bad on the ground compared to on the Sulico, though.. Give em a good firing position and they'll show marines proper area denial.

Honestly, the best tactic to deal with this is to try and kill them before they can amass those numbers. How you do it varies, but as long as you can prevent them from massing, you'll make the Sulico defense more bearable.
Sometimes, bravery comes from the most unlikely sources.

Best way to kill them all is to flank them from the far west or east caves and then move in slowly and destroy the entire damn hive from behind them

The problem I've noticed is that by the time the triple boiler gets rolling, most of the SLs are dead and so organising flanking attacks increases in difficulty by and order of magnitude. It's usually just grunts milling around where people are shooting. Squad cohesion is the best way for marines to fight most anything, and by late game its much less of a thing.

For clarification, only flipped tables; they'll sail right over standing tables.

Yesterday I was queen of a hive where ALL our T3s went boiler. We had 5 total, and the marines got REKT. That is, until we approached north nexus and an OB killed me and 3/5 of the boilers with a direct hit. Xenos still managed to win the round though!

ROUND STATS WHILE COMMANDER:
Marine Majors - 1
Alien Minors --- 0
Alien Majors --- 3

Win/Loss [25%|75%]

Yeah I was second Queen and told the Xenos to keep the same plan; we won with boiler spam since marines never pressed their advantage after that good OB went down.
