RP Rant Time! - Mary Sue characters!

[Xurphorus]

There's a man named Xurphorus "Ghost" Dergens, for some reason, he's seen as a strong, smart leader, although most jokes and analogies seem to fly over his head. Every round, when he gets a labeler, he makes references that to the CM staff for no discernable reason, and one round, mentioned that his beard was given to him by his god "Apophis", and told his subordinates this. It seems Xurphorus cannot tell the different between someone who has a sibling IRL and someone who plays different characters but that's none of my business, it still seems as though he can't RP for shit even as a predator.

Also numbnuts, the only thing in that comment that was Mary Sue-ish was having a sister Marine that's 17 years old. If you're going to make a comeback, make a thread, that statement there was to simply make an example.

Little Salty Sally here eh? Thing is bumpkin, I do RP as a predator when the opportunity is open to me. You can ask all the players I've interacted with as one. So I guess your response was triggered by your very visible grudge towards me and how I play as a Marine, and the fact that you try so hard to be noticed it just makes you look like a fool.

One time this MP named Rhodes used his very apparent grudge to attempt arrest a Marine named Dergens for false charges conjured up by the horrible MP. The others saw and nearly attempted to riot over this but things progressed peacefully. Moral of the story Xur fought the Law and Xur won, and Rhodes the Law man lost.

Clearly your MP sister is a much better Player than you cause the level of RP I've ever seen you bring along was ''Screw Xur this'' and ''Meta-grudge Xur that''. I guess the only thing that could be said about your character is that he uses a shotgun from time to time? Other than that?

A Mary Sue is a character with no flaws/knows how to do everything. I feel like you're throwing the word around a bit too much. (You're plural, not singular)

On that note, there's this one guy who can't aim. That's about it.

Granted, Mary sue characters can and very well do end up being problems, but we do have a rule against having knowledge your character shouldn't have. Eg: A Standard knowing how to hack. Outside of those situations that are OOC, it may seem like a character has no flaws, but unless they act like this angelic being that doesn't exist, it's not a Mary Sue. Even if someone were to, say, make a character that helped everyone, that in itself would be a flaw because they'd eventually collapse from overwork. Thus, the Mary Sue problem on CM is cut off on one side by rules, and on the other by virtue of existence.

So I'm not seeing any Mary Sues around. You (Singular, referring to Crab), haven't really addressed a Mary Sue problem,or any other problem so far, other than your annoyance with how someone (See: Xur) acts ingame.

(Side note:asking this to be locked, but not really because we could potentially address some actual RP problems if this thread train finds some tracks.)

Mary sues have a bit of a subjective meaning. While complete and utter competence is a part of that, the rules really keep people from doing that, so they don't. But I'll bet'cha that they would if they could.

In all seriousness, I feel like mary sue-ing isn't bad if done right. If your character is a parody, almost, of the super macho badass vietnam era badass motherfucker, with an edgy nickname and a bandana, I'll respect you more for that. It's just a matter of not being cringey as fuck.

There's this guy name John ''Cuckshot'' Rhodes, I could be getting the name wrong, maybe not. Well this guy is such a Mary Sue he RPs most of his time hating on other characters and what makes even more cringy he has a 17 year old Marine sister that's an MP on CM. The level of Characters has dropped since the old'n CM days, Wew Lad.

Not to be rude but the old days were worse with Banter and sanctum..Banter was just a bunch of buttbuddies who did their own thing and Sanctum was just pure cancer it had no reason to be here except to make marines feel superior to others which is why most of the people that were in it were cocky annoying assholes.
Notable traits: A Born Leader. He was bred to command, as said by his instructors when he was a young child. Good spirited, great with a wrench, he knows his way with women, except the ones that want him dead or attempt to kill him themselves. Quite the womanizer as all his friends know. He's an honest man, a little too honest maybe, he will hurt your feelings or bring you up with his words and people have said that his presence alone inspires greatness from other marines. Judging from his looks one can tell that he has been through a lot of hardships.
Xur you can never call anyone a mary sue... and in your service history in your dossier you lead a black ops team...and are revered as a war hero

Do I mind them in MRP? Nah, they don't bother me. Heck, mine is sort of a mary sue if you think about it. I think it's in mostly good fun, and doesn't really matter at the end since we're just here to shoot aliens.

My character for example, is a four foot eleven inches marine who is able to perform on the levels of a six foot drugged up man. I think it's fun to play a little snowflakey character every so often, because this isn't real life so we don't need to have the exact same flaws. It's just nice to play someone who is a little bit flawless, because hey, why not? Does it affect how you play the game? Nah. Not at all, so I don't mind snowflake characters, since I sort of play one myself.

It'd be nice if everyone played a normal American boy or girl who signed up for X reason. They have a basic dossier background; family, economic status, education, friends, appearance, ect. And maybe touch on their personality and how they act.

A pipe-dream but I sure as hell wish it were so.

This leads to a decent number of marines being ex-special forces or someone with a DEEP DARK PAST. If you actually want to be good at real RP and not baybystation snowflake autism just get a decent, short haircut, pretend you're an average grunt who joined up for the same reason most marines do; patriotism, they want free college, they want to shoot people, or they fell for a recruitment ad. YOU'RE NOT THE MAIN CHARACTER. Maybe you've been NJP'd in the past for a drunken incident or getting into a fight in the barracks. Maybe you got shot fighting a colonist insurrection. Maybe you're a pretty good marine who doesn't get into trouble and has high fitness scores. Maybe you're a fucking boot who spouts motard sayings like how its a good day to die and have a big USCM tattoo on your back. Those are realistic marines.
