What constitutes good RP?

Post by TheDonkified » 16 May 2017, 18:27

I'm curious to see what people's views of good RP are vs. mediocre RP. Bad RP is pretty obvious, so I don't think it's necessary to go into too much detail into what makes bad RP, at least for this discussion.

However, the line between what makes someone a great RPer versus someone that RPs, but doesn't stand out among the good RPers, is what interests me.

I suppose a good RPer goes out of their way to make their character seem as real as possible compared to a mediocre, who just rps enough not to get banned.
Commander Joseph 'Goliath' Clancy, occaisonal Charlie SL. Widowed father of three. Sufferer of PTSD and extremely Australian.
Corpswoman Judith 'Mèrci' Clancy, quiet, caring daughter looking out for her siblings.
Warrant Officer Emile Clancy, Strict ex-police chief, now a tired CMP.
Xenomorph Queen 'Pandinus' ruler of the Alpha Hive. "I want more children!"
'R'ka Us'Tribi' Serpent Trapper, hateful predator.

For me, being able to tell the difference between people. Sure, grunts might all say y'all and so on - but if I can remember you for some reason and distinguish you by more than your role, then I think you've done a bit of good.

Great characters tend to have some sort of psychological flaw, whilst average characters such a thing never comes up.

Characters that engage with other people. Show affection, fear, sorrow, joy, and embrace the possibility of death together. Someone who isn't afraid to look weak in the game, cause in the end, It's just a round, and that round has a story. If every round was "gung ho, shoot em up!" It wouldn't be a RP game. It'd be a 2D "see who can kill the most Aliens before we lose!" type game.

I find your RP definitions interesting. Either way, acting like a person would go in a certain situation, is role-playing your character. Extremely simple, but difficult to practice when the environment is hostile to this style of play. Each round is a story thanks to this minority that makes them important to other players, who may not be interested in role-playing.

Your character is a living breathing thing. They feel pain, have fears, deal with stress, have wants and needs. RP isnt about being a boisterous, notable person. It's about being a person. Act mad when something shitty happens to them but doesnt affect you, act calm when you yourself are mad about a game mechanic or the like. All it takes is thinking how you'd react if you were behind the screen, and on that you can build traits you don't possess but your character does as a sort of lens to project your own reactions through.

A good example is desiring money even though there is no fucking reason whatsoever to gather wealth at all, or not wanting to go in the spooky cave lined with resin hell. You as a player don't give a damn about either of those things but your marine might.

When you die, someone can say "We lost [Name]!" not "Our [Role] died."
Troublesome, as usual.

React to your environment like a person would, think about what your character's loyalty to the corps. is and show that through your actions. And yeah treat death/capture seriously.

If that doesn't work just smoke a lot.

Don't treat death like it's not death.

Make a believable character, interact with your squad, have actual emotions. Don't be a robot, you're a human with fears, hopes, desires, emotions. Act like it

And use correct grammar. Capitalize I, add apostrophes for plurals and contractions, use the right your and you're, use the right there their and they're, use too and to right. Generally speak like an adult

Also don't have an edgy nickname like "Shadow" or "Slayer" If you absolutely MUST have one then have one that your character would reasonably have. The "Legendary soldier" shtick is never looked on with admiration.

I personally believe, nothing constitutes as "good" RP. A lot of it is circumstantial, while things contribute to the fact it is proper roleplay using the world roleplay in itself makes it feel....less of what it actually is. While CM is a game, you are expected to act at least a little that it isn't a game. That's the difference between "roleplay" and actual "roleplay". You the player have to believe and feel the world around yourself, the world that you are in IS fact real. Believe you are the character you are talking as, feel them be them. Don't be yourself, be them look at things through their eyes. You look at a Military Police through your own eyes and think "Wow, another baldie that likes authority." but what your character would think "Man, I just hope they do their jobs right. I don't want to end up like ______." Make up stories, think of a past that YOUR character has.

Anyway, It's just my two cents.

Good RP as a marine, is like being Bill Paxton in Aliens. Acting badass, talking loads of shit, but then once everyone starts dying around you and you're slowly being killed, THEN you start going crazy, breaking down. That's some good RP there.

Also, a good ol' FATHER SON HATE RELATIONSHIP, pretty nice arpee.

I think personally it depends on whose around you, what marines/crew, because everyone RPs differently with different people.

If you get people around you to be more interested, attentive, or invested in the round then you're golden. Make other people feel something.
