Colonial Marines' darkest day

Post by ty55101 » 08 Jun 2017, 02:44

Throughout the day of June 7th, 2017 many things happened to CM. Let me go through them one by one.

In the beginning of the day, there was a bug in which the CM server did not show up on the Byond hub. This led the server population to be 20-40 lower than it would typically be at that time on a weekday during the summer. It took a few rounds, but staff eventually got it to show up.

As is typical, there was a somewhat major update during the Hi pop times. This update raised the tickrate of the server and lowered movement speed. The values however seemed to be miscalculated so xeno and marines were slower than normal. This didn't do that much, but it did imbalance the game so it needed to be fixed.

The next round, the values were changed but there were unintended consequences. Xeno were still unbalanced in their speed. While the headstaff did testing of these changes and tried to figure out the values that they needed, Feweh announced that the marines could freely kill each other. He also sent many ERTs so that the people that died could rejoin. And it was good.

When this was finally ended and the server restarted, we were greeted with a similar announcement with a similar scenario with the added statements of don't kill on the ERT shuttles (which people were salty about) which made whole groups of people come from ERT shuttles in groups to kill many marines.

This happened two more times and both it seemed like the playerbase fulfilled their bloodlust (which is surprising that it can be done) and many souls cried out for a normal round. Finally Apop was confident enough in the changes that took place that the staff decided to have a normal round. This round was normal in most ways except THE XENO WERE GOING LUDICROUS SPEED. It was debated to restart or not, but there ended up being a vote with three options: Xeno go 3 times their current speed, half the human speed, or wait for speeds to be fixed. If you know this community then you know that xeno going 3 times faster won, but not only did it win but it won by 50 to 20 for waiting. The xeno of course won, and the round ended with many dutch's dozen being sent to defend the ship.

All while this was happening the amount of people on the server kept going down faster than it normally does. In a couple of rounds this had a drastic effect. The round started with no CO, and no XO. All that there was, was a SO who gave a pretty obvious first briefing which had talks of aliens, a CMP who tried to somewhat keep marines in check, and a RO who mostly paid attention to cargo. The SO was quiet and didn't command very much, then eventually fell asleep. The PO was then in charge, but didn't do that much either, so it transitioned to the PO and RO having joint command over the operation. There was little coordination in this round.

Through this round there was a dev. This dev worked tirelessly (I assume) to try and figure out the proper values needed for the movement so that the game could be proper again.

This is where I departed the story, but maybe someone else can finish it. This was one of Colonial Marines's darkest days and should be remembered for the wonderful and hilarious time many of us had during it.
This is how well the CM community understands the actual military.

Not much of a dark day, more of an amusing and somewhat confusing few rounds from what you've just described to me.

And boy, this doesn't scratch what would have been one.

I don't like cute things.

Good hunting.

I was an SO during the 3x speed round where Xenos were going 25+ tiles a second... Needless to say I do not apologize for dropping each and every OB on 0x0 as a mercy to the troops.

They were an interesting couple of rounds of chaos. My Girlfriend and I ended up running in to each other, I subsequently strangled her, but not before she got away and I got gun downed by her.
