The Gasmasks
If Big Red's atmosphere is perfectly breathable then why are gasmask issued at round start?

30 years after deployment, the marines who didn't wear masks will face an 18% higher risk of pneumoconiosis from all the dust particles.

Re: The Gasmasks
someone once told me there used to be no air there. sounded like a bad time for both teams. the marines would have to worry about choking out and the aliens wouldnt be able to infect hosts because huggers pull off masks, meaning hosts would be at terrible risk of choking out

Sounds reasonable, but like most people expect to even live 30 years after all that ICly.Keban DaBrowne wrote:30 years after deployment, the marines who didn't wear masks will face an 18% higher risk of pneumoconiosis from all the dust particles.

Re: The Gasmasks
the old idea behind Big Red was that it would be a planet without breathable air.
LV used to simply be a small colony with a river in between, but then the fog came in and that became its gimmick.
Ice's gimmick is its freezing cold temperatures, requiring the use of snowsuits and coifs in order to protect oneself from frostbite.
And Big Red's old gimmick was a world that had no breathable air outside of the domes, which required the use of masks in order to venture out. But due to how xenos would constantly break the windows of the dome and how huggercombat made getting hugged a death sentence (which both help and hindered the xenos), it was removed due to how difficult it would be to make it work. So now the masks are merely there for fluff and decor, and aren't really required for survival.

Re: The Gasmasks
It's a marine nerf. When a medic tries to give you CPR the gas mask prevents that.

They're mostly used to filter the air from your buddies that live and die with a cigar in their mouths. Cancer is a serious thing

Could add some minor pain or oxy loss to simulate dust storms when outside on Red.

tbh they probably coulda kept the gimmick if they worked the unbreakable windows, and install code to make Huggers act as oxygenated masks

If I recall correctly, in the Aliens universe the huggers actually provide oxygen to their hosts.

Re: The Gasmasks
Can confirm, they do. Perhaps they could make the atmos have maybe 5% CO2 so that way it hurts but it isn't deadly for quite some time.Keban DaBrowne wrote:If I recall correctly, in the Aliens universe the huggers actually provide oxygen to their hosts.

what I'm worried about is why don't the gasmasks look like cool military models?

Re: The Gasmasks
While not technically a game mechanic, I've always thought of it as preventing the planet's dust from getting into your lungs because it could have harmful, later in life repercussions similar to asbestos.Renomaki wrote:the old idea behind Big Red was that it would be a planet without breathable air.

Re: The Gasmasks
Should have left the no atmosphere part in and just build the domes with tougher materials. It would then at least be an interesting map to play on, where now it's basically just the map to play when you're tired of LV because it's different, it offers no other interesting gameplay mechanics.
