Throwing and You: The Worst Outcome

Post by Sneakyr » 08 Sep 2017, 15:15

I've noticed something strange, primarily when throwing flares or shooting/throwing grenades. If you click on a tile you cannot see, specifically a dark tile, you will throw or shoot the grenade in seemingly the opposite direction for the same number of tiles, typically hitting yourself or a group of friendlies, often both. Has anyone else experienced this? I noticed it about 2 months ago and kept an eye on it since.

It's the same thing with any point and click ability. I'll be a hunter going in on a boiler shot, and when I want to pounce away to retreat, the acid will obstruct my vision, and I'll click the darkness, which will pounce me directly backwards into the fight, and it's super annoying.

I've had some problems with flares lately. I think a good way to implement this would be to modify how the throw action works, namely if you click a tile farther than your throw range, you will just throw as close to that tile as you can get.

For me it seems more like if I click a tile in darkness it just won't throw the flare in the first place.

I"m actually pretty annoyed at the throwing backwards flares thing. Never tried throwing nades really but tossing it into a group of marines accidentally like that is a disaster that shouldn't be happening in the first place. I hope that's something that could be rectified, as it makes lighting up the darker places a bit annoying.

Yes. I've actually seen an incident in which a squad engineer managed to incendiary grenade their own people two times in a row because they were clicking darkness tiles. Very unusual that it's doing this now all of a sudden... Well, actually, this has been going on for a little bit now.

It has to do with how the darkness works, what I'm confused about is why it makes you throw things to the bottom-left instead of not throwing at all. You're not ment to be able to throw or shoot at darkness tiles.

I had this happen too. Didn't always happen, though.. Then again, I assume it has something do with moving and tossing than just tossing into dark tiles.

Nothing more annoying than trying to throw a flare, only for the flare to go off target by a mile and waste your time. Worse if it is a throwing weapon...

The bottom left is 0,0 as map coordinates so my best guess is that you're trying to interact with a tile that you can't see, thus the tile has no coordinates for you specifically, so the game is defaulting to the next best thing. That's only my guess because DM defaults to 0,0 for everything the user doesn't specify. I could be dead wrong though.

Is 0,0 the bottom left of the map, or is it centered in the middle of it? If that were the case it could be easily tested by moving southwest of the center point. I.e. if you were at -5,-5 you should throw things northeast.

Well in BYOND negatives just subtract from positives until they hit 0. The bottom left of any map is 0,0.

Ah, I gotcha. I was thinking of it more as a coordinate plane where 0,0 was the exact center.

It goes up and to the right like a grid with x,y coordinates but that's why you'll never see a negative map coordinate in SS13. Z levels can be tenatively seen as a 3D representation of the game but most servers just use Z as space to put more shit on. It works like a 3 dimensional grid in a sense. The more you know. And I'm a mapper so I enjoy map talk.
