Orbital Beacons fam...

Post by Nero3217 » 03 Oct 2017, 17:14

Alright, I'm posting this because there's something that needs to be said that concerns the Squad Officers (SOs). Unless an SL -TELLS- you to fire, please DO NOT FIRE. There's been a good number of times where an SO has pushed the launch button without any coordinates, or close to immediately after the coordinates have been given only to result in either marines getting hit, or the OB being missed.

You know what's better than an OB? And AIRSTRIKE. Since the pilots can see and guide exactly.

That is true, but the OB seems like the discount nuclear weapon that marines use to either determine if they'll push or not. Then there's a bit of the flaw with the Airstrike like the 30mm cannon sometimes not even hitting the targets (I've seen a marine even walk through it at one point without even looking like he was harmed). All in all though, better handling on both can make them incredibly useful as they're intended purposes to be.

When I tell an SO about my OB's I have the coordinates planned out before I EVER plant the OB to prevent this situation occuring. I plant them moments before they are to be used, as aliens will avoid the ever loving shit out of them and even abandon attacks on a front because they see an OB sitting there. The change to OB's planting method made this a bit more difficult, but now you can't OB the alien offensive after chucking one behind their push, you have to think ahead with it. It's a fall back weapon if anything.

Airstrikes are nice and should be used more, however I do wish that the laser viewer was by default equipped onto dropships or combined with the targeting system. It's very expensive and most of the time doesn't get used.

Personally, I wouldn't mind the new OB restrictions if it gave us a slightly wider range on the strikes (Say, 7x7 or even 10x10) as 5x5 is pretty much non-noticeable with the new (sexy) OB rework.

I also feel like CAS will be reworked as right now, they're pretty so-so.

The only thing better is when bald SL's (three attachments FAM!) drop their OB in the FOB for "defensive use". Or left click it and just drop it at their feet near the front. I wish you could use a multi tool on an OB and turn it off...

This is true.. if the pilots print out the laser viewer device.. and has a copilot.

I agree with the earlier statement, the change to how the OB is planted has become a huge detriment. The laser from airstrikes is already bad enough because the aliens will avoid it like the plague, the OB now takes time to set up and is nearly impossible to do under duress. Offsets are nice, but only 5 tiles in either direction is too restricting. It should either be able to be thrown again or the offset distance should be increased.

The worst part about OB's is when command orders you to deploy them 5 minutes after landing on the colony.

A) it's immersion breaking. The marines don't yet know about the Xenos, nor the severerity of their threat
B) it gives the Xenos plenty of time to plan around them
C) it's a perfectly good waste of an OB

Give one to a standard and tell them to charge into Valhalla. Easy as that
