A spreadsheet experiment!

Post by taketheshot56 » 13 Oct 2017, 20:38

A few weeks ago I was bored and whilst playing decided to record my causes of death, I played 17 rounds over 3 days and got this.

Of course there is no for sure way to know if each death to FF was the killing blow due to being in combat with xenos for every single one but needless to say the FF experienced certainly made the difference between life and death.

This is actually pretty funny and I'd love to see it actually continue. Though I would recommend some more standardization with the descriptions of the cause of death.

It'd be pretty funny if there was a coordinated group effort to log causes of death boiled down to aliens, hostile humans, friendly fire, and uncontrollable deaths. You could get some great looking numbers that way. Problem I see is people who play SO for example are probably less likely to die to FF in general.

Sounds like the marines are going to need more combat training if 70% of your deaths were caused by other marines.

God damn, if you ever wondered why marines tend to lose against small numbers of xenos...

The way I see it CM is always about the experience hence why we dont have a scoreboard but it would be cool if there was a way for staff to log enmasse the deaths of each player and how they died. Would be pretty cool.

I could make a spreadsheet as a hunter main and you'll probably see something along the lines of 70% mines, 10% preds, 15% buckshot. 5% other.

Love it, I had a spreadsheet going for a while cataloging marine wins/losses while I was playing on the server. Nothing quite as detailed as the example you've shown though.

This is actually informative and really proving the point that Marines do more damage to themselves than the xeno they face.

I got rarely FF to death by allies. Often, I got shot, but not that severely.

If you got FF, just get back and heal yourself and change your location, that's it.
If someone in a firing line *cough Alpha cough* is not precautious, just change your location, go North, East, West, South, change corridors, change room.

You are FFed, because you are at a certain location, at a certain moment to be FFed. You have your part of responsability for being FFed. If you haven't been there, you wouldn't have been FFed.

For example : Pushing while not caring about if the marines behind you were in firing stance and making suppressive fire will lead you to intense injuries and/or death.

Look at the weapons of the marines next to you. If they have shotgun and you have a rifle ? Get one tile behind on the side of them. They have rifles ? You can get side by side with them. If you have a shotgun, get in front of them.

I'll start counting my deaths round from now on. Will edit my post and compare my results with yours next week, if they are similars to you, fuck me, if there is a difference, well, it means I'm a genius and I require several medals and 15 attachments per round for my dedication.

I played a couple rounds and never died to FF. I wasn't even shot unless I was dragged or slashed by a xeno, but that's understandable.

I think most of the FF is because marines are fighting for forward positions. When I see a sign of congestion at the forward line I leave it and go to the side or find another place.
I miss some of the action, but I don't know what else to do with the aggressive front liners. So I wouldn't say it's your fault if you get FFd, but I agree with Kesserline, it depends a lot on playstyle.

Made a simple Google Form, everyone can submit and view responses. I added 'What involved in your death?' to make it slightly more detailed, like 'pounced then FF'd' then simply 'got FF'd'. The 'Cause of death' question is optional so it's ok if you don't bother to type but please do as it adds more insight.

The one about getting repeatedly exploded by a grenade spec because you were laying next to a crusher really speaks to me. That's one of my biggest pet peeves in the game: people willing to use one/more of their friends as bait or acceptable collateral damage. It's stupid but also incredibly cruel and out of character.

If you shoot an alien dragging someone away, and they get FFed or hit with blood then that's acceptable. Firing a grenade at a queen that just downed five marines that are still LAYING THERE is not okay. Flaming a dying marine in your path to get a runner is not okay. Use your bullets, dingus.
