Ridley Scott and the Colonial Marines?

Post by KingKire » 25 Oct 2017, 14:20

Does anyone know if Ridley or any of the other creative dudes behind some of the alien series know about the CM server? I know SS13 sometimes leaks out into other places on the web, but for a fanmade game, its pretty sweet, and unique in that not many games go through the whole process of simulating the chain of command.

Of course, it all depends on if the people behind the aliens(tm) series are jazzed at seeing creative interpretations or if they like to clamp down hard on that sort of stuff...if which case, i think keeping a tight lip would be good to keep the 2d ship a-flying.

It might be nice to open a wider door, letting some people enter through and expand the ss13 community, givin' more of a creative pool to draw from for all of ss13.

Honestly i think the game is too complicated for the majority of gamers to be interested in. Maybe im a people hater but it seems the majority of gamers dont care for or apreciate a lot of the deep complicated games.

I probably wouldn't let him know in case any studio wants to start pulling copyright shit on the server.

if they did i don't think they'd give a shit. the Alien (franchise?) is getting pumped back to life since prometheus, and it's not going in the direction of the original movies at all (of course, they're prequel). the guys who worked on the original movies would probably say "cool" to the sight of it atleast. i'm sure the colonial marines game in 2013 killed a lot of the alien game hype, isolation being the only good mainstream alien game i can think of.

this raises the debate of "is CM good enough to be a mainstream game", and i don't want to dig too deep into that, but i'd personally have to say 'no' and leave it at that. the universe, lore, and atmosphere is there, but it's definitely not the vision i'd assume ridley scott has at all. the alien series in my opinion was heavily about ripley and her own survival and story, a very single-sided series up until the last few minutes of alien 3 (we'll assume Resurrection never exists). isolation is the best story in an alien game because it's essentially just an exact copy of alien on a civilian ship. if ridley were to play cm, i don't think he'd give a shit about the gameplay- he'd definitely be more interested in the story he was experiencing. and if you think about it, the personal story you experience in cm is hit or miss.

tl;dr:
even if they knew about it, i don't think they'd give a shit, let alone like it at all. it's comparative to half life 2 and half life 2 rp. same universe and atmosphere, very different games.

Haha, who knows, maybe James Cameron would be jazzed about it haha.

As for SS13 CM being a comparable game, i'd say it's definitely a contender in the welter weight ring. There have been alot of games in the aliens series (40+ish?) and i've played a few that definitely felt from the desks of Phone-it-in" Co.
