Dumb question

Post by Fred3764 » 21 Dec 2017, 19:50

Hey, I'm a fairly new player to Colonial Marines, usually only ever observing or playing with enough friends to pick up my slack.

Just sorta wondering if it's okay to suck in this game, I am laughably unrobust and generally bad at this game but I wanted to try playing this game more without my buddies. Just wondering if it's okay to be shit, because I'd hate to be the guy to ruin a game.

It's okay to be shit if you're playing a role with little expectations like a squad marine. Nobody expects much of them and they frequently make mistakes, but that's part of the fun.

I'd recommend you stay away from any role except squad marine until you get a good grasp of how the game plays and the controls. The only real time somebody will get frustrated at you if you're new is if you take up an important job slot when you have absolutely no idea what you're doing.

You'll be fine. Staff are mostly forgiving, but try not to shoot other marines by accident, it ruins rounds. Here's my tip, never be in the back of the squad and shoot. Only shoot if you are in the front lines, because people love to move and if you're shooting from the back you are GOING to shoot someone

Absolutely fine to suck as long as you aren't taking an important job like a command role, spec, or a chief of a department. I have played SS13 since 2012 and CM on and off since 2015 and I still have my moments of suck. As long as you are trying to improve and slowly moving up you will be fine.
Lennox Clarke- Corporate Asshole or Duty-bound Officer depending on the role.
Manley Maclagan- hot shot pilot, spec, or grunt.

Welcome to Space Station 13, Colonial Marines!

To answer your question, yes!
Everyone starts somewhere, and there can be a learning curve but there are resources that can make sure you really enjoy yourself.
The Wiki is a great place to look. You can also ask mentors questions via the Admin tab > Ahelp . There are dedicated staff, the mentors here to help you get started or answer any gameplay questions you have.

For unrobustness, I have a lot of stories and I'm a mentor!

To give you a story of what unrobustness I have done:
  • As a reseacher, made a weight loss pill. Took it. Died within 10 seconds with my last words as "Arrghhh"
  • Poked my head with a bayonet
  • Not known how to reload a shotgun
  • First few times I played, I didn't know you could left click vendors to get stuff from them.
  • Recently as a doctor, accidentally broke my patients ribs and didn't know how to fix them
  • Didn't know that you can click on body parts at the bottom right to select different parts of the body

Honestly, I'd say your best bet is to jump in and give it a shot! Try playing as a standard boot (PFC) and follow this guide: Marine QuickStart Guide or play as a xeno and follow this guide: Xeno Quickstart Guide

Have fun, follow the rules and ask if you need any help :)

Eh you can do everything right and still be dunked on. I was a late spawn SL yesterday and lasted 6 minutes on the surface after essentially walking into a trap

I’ve been on the server for close to two years, and just recently I KO’d myself as a predator during a lodge defence. It happens, you’ll get better and better. We all start somewhere and thats generally as bad. Take it easy pal! Watch some ss13 youtube vids that are on CM and you’ll learn. Just read the rules and do your best to not break them. Hope to see you on the server!

When I started two years ago, I did not know of any concept of SS13. I was simply a typical Brazilian baldie, with the exception of doing server rule violations of course.

Over time I have been learning and currently, I consider myself decent and competent in doing in-game tasks. Of course I still make mistakes (to this day this bald here has a certain hatred in the hacking system of SS13), but it is with them that I improve the way in which I play.

It is impossible to avoid making stupid mistakes, but this is one of the main factors that contribute to your !FUN on the server.

For some, the learning curve of the game is complicated, but if you are interested in learning it, it will be easy to understand. And do not forget that no one is or was a master of SS13. I believe that no matter who we are, we will make mistakes while playing.

To conclude, the SS13 experience is composed of robust moments and moments neither so robust nor competent... All of us in a certain way are equal in this matter, no exeption.

While you still learn to play, start playing as a simple PFC to learn fully about basics, such as the game interface. As Kneez said, there are several videos on YouTube that can introduce you to SS13 mechanics, and that the mentors on the staff besides being good people are experienced and can help you in case you have any difficulty or doubt.

The essential thing is to have fun following the rules, remembering that "we are all shit", but with a different smell each.
Peter.

It's definitely okay to suck in this game, we all suck in some ways. For example, I'm absolutely terrible with atmospherics and will probably screw things up hard if you tell me to repair some pipes. I agree with the others as well, we're all shit but we all have different smells.
Phillip Driver, jack of all trades, reliable in some. Your typical jumpy flamer PFC or ammo fumbling CPL, always has a pair of ballistic goggles on him for unknown reasons. Will probably die mid sentence, because he talks (and gets bullied) too much for his own good. He has his moments though.

Jim, a Gen 2 Synthetic. Has a tendency to get melted to bits when planet side, and that's when he's behind barricades. Despite that, he's vigilant and always ready to drag you out of danger, even if it damages him in the process.

My man, don't fret. Most of us suck so bad you would think we are a Kardashian, as long as you play a not so important role ie/ normal marine/an MT if you want to fix stuff/CT because we need people in cargo and as long as you can listen you can do it.
I have been playing on this server for just under a year now and I still suck, but you must embrace the SUCK. It is the only way. Oh and when you are learning, pop a tab open with the wiki guides for whatever you need. First time I was a doctor I healed most of medbay just by following the wiki.
Alan"Arcade"Murphy the best damn marine there ever was
Alpha squad lead sometimes
Medic most of the time
Always a scrub
Also known as "Doctor" Landon Wilson
I may cut off an arm to give you a robo leg but you will love me for it
