Survivors and devour

Post by TicTac » 21 Mar 2018, 22:01

I love playing survivor. It's one of my favourite roles in this gamemode, the only problem is, 90% of my games have ended with 2 runners spam tackling while one devours me while I'm 100%, or I hide long enough to get rescued and get ignored. Devouring seems op, especially given that they can just do it, no downside for them, and it's effectively ended your game. At the very least I'd expect a more injured xeno to reflect their injuries in how they fight and whether or not they can devour an entire human whole and transport it across the map. It would be swell if you could fight back when they tried to devour, or chaining tackle wouldn't just condemn you to death. Thoughts on this?

The downside is that they have to risk you getting up and fight again.

Yeah, feels like all they had to do was just spam chain tackle or spam-neuro

I see the devouring mechanic as a design compromise in the early development of CM. Due to the way the damage system works, it is way easier and less tricky to just kill hosts outright. As seen in HKO2006's video above, the risk that xenomorphs have to take in order to devour and the teamwork that is required to ensure a successful attempt is one of the few things working in survivors favor.

While I dont see it as particularly faithful to the material that inspired the game. It is a decent alternative for the consistent and frighteningly expedient non-lethal take-downs as seen in the sources. Although, with the somewhat recent adjustments to drag speeds, I could see it potentially being removed in conjunction with some changes to the human damage systems and added complexity to the xenomorph grab and nest mechanics.

Right now though, it does its job.

Removing it without a proper alternative would just cause the xenos to kill the survivors instead of infecting them.

Devour is a little strong at the moment.

Especially due to the nerfs to damage dealt trying to break out when in the stomach.

Agreed, Devour is a tad bit too strong.

The last attempt a Xeno had trying to devour me resulted in the death of two runners and critting a third.

Reverse chestburst out of them and go down fighting, they'll likely end up killing you in the process. But if you've taken down one or two and they get nothing from it that is a definitive win for you as a survivor.

I was using a screwdriver. When I burst out of one and got tackled I then switched to a crowbar to deliver blunt force victory on the others before dying after having both legs chopped off and one arm.

I don't believe devouring is op, as it takes multiple xenos to get you devoured. Like others have said, it's not the end. You have a fighting chance (literally) to get out and take them by surprise.

I thought using weapons while inside Xenos was bugged.

I’m pretty sure you can’t actively pull things out whilst devoured. Last time I played (a week ago) I was a marine who got devoured at full health because two runners were spamming tackle. The runner had me for 4 minutes because he was incompetent and couldn’t find the hive, but even though I was clicking my gun and my knife to pull them out I couldn’t. This was the third time it’s happened to me too

So I’m not entirely sure but I have reliable evidence that you can’t reverse burst anymore. Heck, in LOOC when I asked the runner it even told me you couldn’t.

I thought these changes were intentional as well until I saw this last week.

Devouring isn't hard for me, Maybe its just because i play sent caste on a regular basis, But when devouring humans, actually having other xenos makes it harder for me, as there's always this dumbass who pulls the human away from me mid-devouring or some dumb stuff. Im better off capturing humans all alone.

Just read he git about it, you can't click the Xeno right now. You also cannot draw weapons while inside due to clicking being bugged, but if you try to move (arrow keys or wasd) then you should be doing damage to the Xeno.

I quite hope the devouring stays the same, being unable to harm the xeno. That means more infections.

Ehhhhh, there's definetely a nice compromise between the two. It sucks as a survivor when you get tackled down and devourered, you might as well tab out and go watch an episode of your favourite show on netflix, I don't think reverse bursting works anymore, so you're powerless to do anything.

it's not that it was removed, but there's a bug involving being 'stunned' while being devoured which makes the stun carry on indefinitely into the swallow. most likely you'll be stunned while devoured because it's not like tackling interrupts the devour channel

at least, that's what i believe

I know it was rolled back the change in which if you are infected you'd get control of the larva regardless of your Xeno preferences, but if you have Xeno on, does it not let you control it automatically? If so you can always play Beno if caught, since you are yet another host. If you get killed, however...

And trust me, it's much, much easier to just kill a survivor than to devour it. If you got to the point that they were able to devour you, you'd be dead several times already by now.
