Moderators in CM.

Post by RedsPro » 19 Apr 2018, 21:30

Becoming a Moderator in CM seems to be one of the easier roles to acquire. In my opinion Moderators should be forced to go through a timed Mentorship. Becoming a figure of authority in a community that's more or less unknown to you is something that dilutes the experience and community trustworthiness of our staff team. Becoming a Mentor would not only introduce the individual to the community but give them ample time to get a better grasp on the mechanics and quirks of the game itself.

I Believe you should have to have...
1.Mandatory Mentorship before consideration for Moderator.
2.Forum Account should be at least Three Months old.
3.Active Ingame and on the Forums.

1.As a Mentor assisting players with gameplay and rule understandment is your main assignment. The experience of going through a mandatory mentorship would not only increase the presence of the individual but also increase their personal understanding and interpretation of the Server Rules. Being forced to start at the bottom of the totem pole so to speak would give the potential moderator valuable experience on how to best deal with players who may or may not be in the wrong. Jumping straight into the Moderator position gives an inexperienced and unknown player power that in my opinion they may not be ready for.

2.Currently the age of your forum account has to be around a month old, the same with whitelisted roles. In my opinion one month for a position as high as Moderator is too low, After a single month at best a new player could get the basic grasp of the game and still be considered an unknown. After three months a player would understand the mechanics in depth and have a stronger presence in game.

3.Not only should the players account on the forums be a certain age but during their time on the forums and as a mentor they should be as active as they can be. Being active in game and on the forums would benefit the potential moderator as they would learn to play all roles because the knowledge would be integral for a successful mentorship.

I would like to make this CRYSTAL CLEAR, i am not trying to attack or single out individuals i just personally believe you shouldn't be able to jump to moderator with zero experience.

All you need to understand is the server rules and staff protocols and show that you understand them with a decent app.
Being a mentor has nothing to do with actualy moderating besides seeing them do it, and the trial period works for that anyway.
It would be more harmful than anything else, we haven't had issues with players becoming moderators and it's a volunteering role that you don't really need to jump through hoops just to do.

A mentor manages gameplay questions and doesn’t deal at all with moderating. If they are they aren’t doin fit right

Not everyone who’s a mentor becomes a moderator, they’re completey separate.

Mods go through a trial phase that is literally meant to address everything you've brought up in this post. With the month you are in direct contact with people who can answer all your questions along with the 1 month (minimum) that they'd have already on the server they'd have more than enough knowledge to apply the rules.

Hell, I'd rather have a mod that's more unfamiliar with the community, that way the more recognizable players who are allowed to get away with ridiculous shit would actually face consequences (don't worry Carson I'm not explicitly talking about you).

Additionally, I can tell you from being a mentor that you don't just magically pick up information that makes you a more rounded player. Most mentorhelps are very simple questions or just sending new players the quickstart guide or answering some basic questions. The only way you actually get to know the roles and more complicated information is by playing those classes. Just 'being a mentor for longer' will not accomplish anything.

As an example I was a mentor for ~3-4 months and I had Specialist on high for a large portion of that time because I felt I should know the different marine roles and how they function in case I got a question about them. I didn't get the role a single time in those months, that is to say that it's stupid to argue about a time limit on staff members because at the end of the day a large portion of knowledge gathered is from playing RNG selected roles and are thus out of people's hands.
