I've played this game on and off ever since it was released in 2003.
When Exadv1 first created the game, it was just a simple bare bones game. There was no robust systems, just basics. There was an engine, but all you could do was for giggles was light it. There was no power system, no advanced medical system. The game was basically a tool box deathmatch-a-thon or wait for someone in toxins to make a bomb and blow up the station. Half the time the "traitor" would get caught or not even bother to complete the objectives. As the public server ran by Exadv1 had no real rules or moderations, security would just jail anyone for any offense they deemed fit, and kill them with an electric chair.
Meteor was a fun survival game mode, but even then it came down to you just randomly getting sucked out a wall into space when the meteors destroyed the walls, if you didn't get to the shuttle area fast enough. Even then half the time the meteors would take out the shuttle and kill everyone.
SS13 has come a long way, especially with all the different servers and game modes.
Us old dogs didn't have any of this fancy stuff, but we still made the game fun, even if you were bashed to death with a red tool box 99% of the time.
Even though most of the time you pretty much met your demise from the following:
Getting crushed to death by a random meteor
Getting blown up by someone messing around in toxins
Getting set on fire by an engineer who flooded the station with hot plasma
Getting toolboxed by a monkey
Getting toolboxed by a random player because they have no idea what they're doing
Getting shot by a nuclear operative
Getting shot by the traitor
Getting choked to death by security
Getting electrocuted by security
Falling out an airlock into space because of lag and suffocating to death
Nothing much has changed
God I feel old now.

Re: How long have you played SS13
Exadv1 never ran any public servers. Goon ran the first ever public SS13 servers.
Anyway I’ve been playing since 2014 I think. Maybe 2013 really late into that year but I dunno I’ll check later. First servers I ever played on were New Eden, and of course, Goon. But the one that really caught me was CM, or at the time known as NE-CM. The new eden one. That only lasted for like 4 months since by the time I started New Eden was already going down hill. Than NE-CM went down so I stopped playing besides the occasional goon station round. Than I saw Infestation Station and assumed it was some spin off or something but I stuck with it. I took a break in 2015 and came back early 2016 back to CM.
But yeah I’ve been playing for 4-5 years now. Probably four but MAYBE 5

Re: How long have you played SS13
Actually, before the goons got their hands on the source code, there was a default server, but everyone else had private servers. I ran one for awhile I hosted on my Pentium 4 computer with the Something Awful community before a full time Something Awful server came online shortly before they got their hands on the source code.
You can blame me for the Wizard idea game-mode. Originally with the servers, you were limited to traitor, nuke, meteor, monkey, and extended. I used the admin abilities and went around roleplaying as a wizard. I also helped create the idea for revolution mode by running around and using a spawned flash to tell people in-game "Ok you're a revolutionary now." We had no tools, or abilities, so we had to trust people not to screw it up, or we had to admin kick them.

Re: How long have you played SS13
When I started playing, it was when Good was THE shit back in the day, where everyone and their uncle would go to indulge in 2D spessman adventures. I think I was about... I dunno, can't quite remember how old I was when I started playing SS13. Hell, I don't even recall just HOW I got into it.. I think I discovered it via TV tropes and found the game so amusing that I sought it out.
Sadly, Goon was also the first (and thankfully only) server I ever got a permaban from, for posting a disgusting furry joke that I figured the goons (who are known to hate furries) would get a kick out of. Turns out it wasn't, and I got a 7 day ban. Then when I tried to appeal it, the admin decided to bump it to perma simply because I dared to remind him of it.
After that, I never bothered going back. In fact, I think it had been a year or two before I got onto another server and started playing again... Then that server got fucked up and lost a large number of players, and for some reason could never recover, so I quit again... Then I found Paradise and played that shit for a good long while, having many good times and all that, yadda yadda yadda....
Then one day, I discovered CM, and while at first it wasn't quite my cup of tea, I would grow more and more attached to it until it gone to the point where it was the only one worth playing. So, now I am here.
You could say that I been playing this game off and on for YEARS, and somehow still do, despite how hard I try to quit. Damn addicting game...
