Hand-made grenades - what are they useful for anymore?

Post by ThePiachu » 25 Jun 2018, 13:55

So I've been playing around with making some grenades as a Researcher lately. Tried making explosive grenades, smoke grenades, foaming grenades, etc., but none of them strike me as particularly useful, save perhaps a smoke lube grenade against UPP. So, what would you say some of the worthwhile grenades are these days? Is there anything that would be useful against xenos, or are we currently stuck doing some cleaning grenades?

Sadly, research nades have been heavily nerfed due to the whole xeno-explosion resistant thing, they aren't particularly usefull against xenos anymore. It might be usefull on HvH rounds, though, Like Soporific/Acid grenades.
I play Sydney 'Lilly' Wood, the totally not depressed doctor, And the marine Dylan Bell, that probably joined the USCM by accident.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions related to research.

Damn, we gotta give the CLF a chem machine and a few boxes of chem nades next event...

nerfed heavily because of people making spacelube smoke, anesthetic smoke, etc.

Metal foam grenades are still useful for shoring up a defensive vulnerability in a pinch and providing some time to get a barricade up.

I mean, spacelube smoke nades is exactly what I'd use against UPP - throw it at their cades, let them retreat, then unga charge back and slip. Then throw in a few real grenades and you're done...

The best grenade you could make would be hidden signal grenades that are metal foam.

Spread them through an enclosed hallway and when the Xenos over extend signal the grenade. Xenos strength is their speed and ability to heal up.

You force a fight they can’t retreat from.

Metal foam nades aren't as great as people make them out to be. Takes way too long to actually become metal foam in my experience so you can't really make these elaborate traps unless xenos overextend SUPER far.

However, when the foam actually becomes metal foam, it acts as a decent obstacle, albeit a temporary one.

Hmm, I guess if you put in proximity sensors you could make the grenades into makeshift mines? Probably pretty useful against UPP, but could make xenos concerned a bit as well...

The problem is they can't be made with IFF so marines will probably trigger them before anyone else does. I can't remember if you can still make flash powder, but that would make for a neat HvH weapon. From what I've seen most of the grenades don't do enough damage to be used offensively.

For HvH, having either flashbang mines or spacelube mines might be hilarious... Or get the teargas from MPs and make that into a mine...

I don't think space lube slips if you're wearing boots now. Also I don't know if you could get a beaker of pepper spray but that could be an interesting grenade.

Teargas grenades can be taken apart, and yes, you can get the individual ingredients - https://youtu.be/bM3vQvu8UU8?t=949 , https://youtu.be/bM3vQvu8UU8?t=1166

As for the lube - I'd have to double-check. I think the changelog was only about Water not being able to slip you...

ChloralHydrate is probably god tier in HvH provided your opponent isn't wearing gas masks. Non lethal boiler smoke got nothing on this stuff. It will nearly instantly knock you out and as you lie in the smoke you will also take a crazy amount of toxin damage. The effect paralyzes you for about one minute but it doesn't take away any of the pain. Truly the weapon of choice for the sickest marine out there.

Edit: The knockout effect is instant regardless of dosage.

Tested it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIuEPfu ... .be&t=7095 . Space Lube still works on boots.

I remember when we used to hide grenades with signalers in satchels (Caryl, I believe that was your idea, you genius !)
It was an instant xeno killin' trap.
