Project Nightmare is live. (Map Randomization.)
Last round we decided to start the (soft) launch for what we have called project nightmare.
This project is map randomization. We have only applied this to LV-624 so far.
Now a couple of things about how it works.

It is map randomization, not procedural generation.
We are not asking a computer to generate the entire map. We are just swapping out sections.
I estimate we have about 95 options at this time. Do expect that to grow and to see new stuff during the tests.
Because I think part of the fun is finding these changes yourself I am not going to reveal what changes.
If you have any questions feel free to ask them here.

Notes:
We are not (yet) planning on changing the inner caves. (This makes it a maze for both humans and xeno's.)
Overwatch/queen maps will show the correct layout.
We try to maintain the wiki maps as well.
There is stuff that helps the marines, there is stuff that helps the aliens and stuff that helps neither.

Feedback
Your feedback is important for this project.
If you see stuff that causes issues feel free to report it in this topic. (Or to gitlab it.)
Just take a screenshot and explain the issue.
I am looking for:
1. The misplacement of sections. If this happens it is a big issue and it should never happen.
2. Misalignment. If whatever we place down does not work with what is next to it tell us.
Those are the big 2. Anything else has a way lower priority.

I liked the first round if it, spiced things up, just ah overgrown hydo seemed a bit odd sense the place was recently left not a whole year

It does not have to be overgrown in the time between the distress and marines coming. It might have been overgrown already just like atmos.
Don't forget hydro has the perfect conditions for plant growth.

Was refreshing. Had a problem with cutting the vines in hydro a lot of the vines refused to be cut unless I was on the tile to the left or right of them.

I really like the idea behind this. Is this similar to how map generation in Dead By Daylight works? (Always the same structures, but in random locations except for important buildings which are always in the same spot)

I feel like this will heavily break down on rush metas.
Marines will have to scout out areas or devise new plans on the spot instead of rushing into areas they would have memorized OOC.

Hmm...so what I understand from this is that basic props (ex: storage containers) will be randomly placed around the map as well as other misc. items while the main landmarks will stay the same? If I'm wrong correct me please.

We have fully mapped locations (currently domes or part of domes for lv) that we place into predetermined locations

Other maps will have other stuff... Cave ins, nonworking elevators, hidden stashes of weapons, research on predators or xenomorphs with results... Etc

This is exactly what i've been waiting for to spice up CM.
Survivors going right into the same place every time looking for the SAME gun in the SAME place is unfun.
Survivors legitimately scavving spots they'll know will have different loot or obstructions IS fun.

Marines rushing certain spots of the map for useful items they know will sometimes be there is predictable.
A lucky marine finding a cache of metal for his engineer, or a cool gun or blade is unpredictable and lends to more RP and gameplay opportunities.

I think this is a wonderful opportunity aswell to reintroduce content that was cut from common sight in the game but still in the code;
Dragunovs, ppsh,alien artifacts, odd armor or clothes, traps or obstructions to alien/survivor/marine travel.
You can really tell some good stories & create good gameplay with this feature if it's done well. Take inspiration from /TG/'s Artifact rooms.
Cut them xenos up with yer machete! :D

To be clear, we are not seeding items

If item is there, it is because it is in correct place orwas brought there. We will not randomly drop dragunoff with some chance, but you might find out that local CL loves to hunt with his sniper rifle and that rifle is well hidden from prying eyes of local security

One of the reasons I've drifted away from CM recently is the lack of variety in rounds. This could be exactly what I was missing. Praise be to developers.

Why is it called Project Nightmare? I'm too lazy to go took up it last being talked about. Personally, I think it could have been called something cooler like Project Boonie Hat.

Well, byond stands for Build Your Own Net Dream the program you use to make maps (and code) is called dream maker.
Nightmare is not using dream maker to make these maps.
We wanted a code name for obvious reasons and it was Nethiafins his idea.
He can elaborate more but this is the short version.

The BYOND dev tool is called Dream Maker, because it creates "Dream Worlds"

This tool twists those Dream Worlds creating Nightmares. Hence the name

But in reality, when I was making this tool (half a year ago) I wanted a name that was a wordplay on the BYOND Dream Maker, so... And the project took the name of the tool
