I made a ground map.

Post by Abbysynth » 04 May 2015, 18:39

I'm sure CM already has experienced mappers, but I was bored and was inspired by CM's lack of a proper, fun ground map, so I made one in DreamMaker. It's not entirely done yet, this is version.. maybe 3? I started designing it like 2 days ago. It's an archaeology dig site on a jungle planet, with large mountain range to the north with several ancient ruins, a crashed shuttle, and a network of xeno-infested caves and tunnels. To the southeast is dense jungle (with monkeys for hugging), and a series of buildings called OBPs - Orbital Building Pods, dropped down from orbit by Corporate vessels, namely archaeology support buildings and associated structures.

Anyway, here's a sneak preview:

IGNORE THAT SHIT WE GOT SOME NEW HOTNESS

Bear in mind it is NOT complete yet, so don't take this picture as gospel.

It's not done yet! That's why it's just a sneak preview.

If there's a certain area you want to see, I can probably do that though.

Ah, I can't give shots of those yet, nothing's in them but the basic structures. Maybe in a few days!

Those are the Orbital Pods though, the Corporate buildings, archaeology centers, research labs. The northernmost 4 are dorms, fitness and rec, kitchens and botany, the eastern grey ones are storage (with one broken), the big one is the research labs and Corporate center, and the southwest ones are archaeology artifact storage, Corporate offices, a robotics lab and the power generator.

Is it just me or does it look really l- You know what, forget the size. We could probably use a huge ass map anyways.

It's actually 180,180. Standard maps are 255 x 255. It just looks bigger because the standard station map is like 40% empty space. A 255 x 255 ground map would need a crapload of "filled" areas or it would be completely enormous.

Plus it'll look a lot smaller when there's items and details and stuff in it.

Some updated screenshots: Bear in mind these are subject to change, of course.

You can't see most of the decals or overlays, but I can assure you that a "last stand" zone is not a pretty sight.

(Bonus points if you get the significance of the sandstone block layout)

An unfinished area, the Corporate main offices. One of the few places not pre-broken-into.

Image
Also unfinished, the central corridor in the main research bay.

Bitch, shut up and take my money!
This is awesome!
And that jungle area, that gives reason for the monkeys to be out and about.
Can't wait to see this finished!

Yep, effectively the marines are landing at night, or maybe a night-cycle of the planet. There will be lamps outdoors surrounding the entire facility but they begin unpowered until the generator is set up in the engineering pod.

Landing at Night?
...
That's too hardcore...
They should land at Solar Eclipse phase.

The potential for FOB's with this is amazing, you wouldn't even have to use the main station. You could build a base in the desert from the ground up and surround it with floodlights for some starship troopers action.

Holy shit. This is epic.

Is this using our current repository or latest Bay? We'll be updating the code to a much newer version of Bay soon. It may not matter much, or it might matter a lot.

I'm building it on the newest Bay code, but it actually doesn't matter much currently, I'm using all older assets so it should be crossways-compatible. Hell, it's probably about 95% compatible even with TGstation (though not Goon).

My GOD, I love you. You are awesome.

Also how does one make maps? I've been playing SS13 for 4 years and I never looked into it. Once exams are done I must make maps!!

It's actually pretty easy:

a) Download a source code
b) To right corner of BYOND client is a gear button, click that and select Start Dreammaker
c) Open your source code in dream maker (a project is called an "environment")
d) Navigate the files on the left till you see a Maps folder, in there is all your maps and where you'd put a new one. It saves as a .dmm file which can be transferred to other projects, or you can just copy-paste an entire map into another project.
e) profit???

Note: it can take a while to load since it updates all the sprites and objects and stuff pretty frequently. Normally maps are divided into one map with multiple Z-levels, but for some reason the latest Bay uses 6 different map files for the z-levels, 'exodus-1.dmm' and so on. Open that file and you'll see the vanilla station.
