How do flamethrowers work?

Post by helios345 » 14 May 2015, 23:03

For whatever reason the flamethrowers seem to do no damage. Like I set some areas on fire and I walk through it and literally no damage is done. Does this only apply to marines or to aliens too?

From what I heard from Abbysynth I think, (Do not quote me on this) flamethrowers basically heat the tile the flame is on up, and that means that aliens or marines will have to stand on said tile to take damage. Aliens tend to respond quickly to fire and won't stay in the fire, so it is near useless.

However, I think we are getting a new flamethrower worked on, so have patience and give it time.

Yar: the old flamethrowers used to squirt out a bit of plasma, then heat up that tile a little bit to make fire. It was really bad especially with our REALLY bad atmos code. I rewrote them to not even use atmos at all - they do initial damage if something is directly caught in the beam when you first fire it, and then anything in the flames takes damage over time only while the fire exists. It also roasts stuff like huggers and weeds.

And yes, I'm aware the initial damage is a WEE BIT too high, expect some balance nerfs pretty soon, it was kinda meant for clearing weeds and hives, not incinerating everyone in sight. But hey, at least it's not useless now!

I agree with Abby. If you're trying to use a flamethrower as a killing machine, you're doing it wrong. It's meant to clear way for the guys with the guns.

If you would permaban a player, you owe it to him to look into his logs and hear his side of the story. And if you cannot bear to do that, then perhaps the player does not deserve to be banned.

The flamethrower is pretty nice now. I like the changes to it. Though, I agree that the initial damage is too high, need to tone it down a bit before everyone starts to beat eachother up for the flamethrower

50 plasma per shoot is the lowest, 2 shot and it crit/kills any t1 aliens, never tried on t2 but I guess they'll crit, then die from time damage. I was told with 100, it litterally OS'ed the runners. I am not going to imagine what happen if you find the plasma cannister... And shoot 200 or more. I mean... Instakill the queen with 500 ? XD.

I like the new flamethrowers even though I am an alien player. They have very little ammo though which balances the damage

It releases just a bit of plasma.

Not entirely true. There is one plasma tank in engineering that can be used to top off the tanks. And at least 30 Plasma tanks on the Nostromo alone with 303kpa. And, if you know what you're doing in atmos, you can fill more tanks.

I've been trying to test if superchilled plasma (70k) plasma does more damage than room temperature, as it would yield more moles of plasma per kpa. But, Atmos only has one freezer so it's difficult to do without marines holding atmos and protecting the APC.
